Maybe if you mentioned what 'tablet' you had and what Operating System it was on (Apple? Android? Windows?) then we could advise better.

You know which one it is because you ask your friends if you can use their wifi. If they say yes, they will tell you the name of the network and the password.

And if they don't know it will be written on the router. BT Routers come with a detachable plastic tag.

I imagine the people who are worried about a DWP investigation don't have anything to fear then,,,:T

Mine are Borgin and Burkes and Unseen University :)

If it's Android then https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.farproc.wifi.analyzer together with a helper app it suggests you install makes checking the nearby WiFis and connecting to them a little easier than navigating through settings.

From using that myself it seems that the majority of people use the default SSIDs and presumably passwords too.

Yep and people like that are the last ones to trust, first thing people should do is change their wifi SSID and password, no strike that the first thing they should do is change their router admin password and if possible the admin user id .... I can go into my local pub use their free wifi and log into their router using "admin" and "password", boy do i wish I was malicious

    Hi, thanks all...

TABLET is a Google Nexus 7. 176 pages of emanual, none seem a lot of help on this.

I had assumed you could turn it on and just connect to the nearest wifi (niave ?)

On initial turn on, I do remember 'finding' my own wifi. at home. Works. In W'spoons, it seems to be 'Cloud' . Works.
Cloud shows all local (my town + 2 neighboughs (though no way to access them)- mine NOT shown), nearby. What about if I go to another town/place ?

Nothing in 'settings' to automatically connect.

If I was travelling, and sat on a Virgin train "free wifi", then what would I need to do? I had assumed nothing. Not so ?

Is it a way forward to instal the Wifi analyser mentioned ? What that just pick up the nearest wifi ?? (Sorry to be a numpty but hey, I maybe know something you want to have more info on. MANY thanks)

there was no password in/at W'spoons. If I sat on a Virgin train, is there a password on my ticket/seat ?
