Renault Scenic Problems

Options
To cut a long story short Cam belt went at 41,500 miles against Renaults recommended change at 72,500 miles. Ongoing discussions with Renault uk (their customer relationship managers dont seem to keen to call back) offered 60% of parts costs. Has anyone any tips on how I can get this increased.
Thanks

    How old is it?

60% of parts costs is not that unreasonable as timing chains/belts can snap at almost any time...

I suppose they could argue that it was due a new belt just based on time rather than milage.

Have you had it from new,

if not always a chance the mileage could have been fiddled with, so many of these are ExLease cars that there is always the temptation to fiddle to avoid mileage charges.

Service History stamped or not it is still easy to fiddle the books.

The mileage is just under 60% of the recommended life of the belt, therefore Renault's offer seems more than generous.

  • I don't think it's thae parts cost that is going to bump up the bill, it's the labour costs that will cost you.

Ask them for at least 50% of the labour cost off as well.

The issue is that the part has not lasted long enough, it would have needed replacing sooner or later, and at this time, a labour charge would be incurred. Therefore I don't see why there should be a reduction in this part of the cost.

The cam belt actually breaking can cause major damage to the engine, increasing both the parts and especially the labour costs greatly when compared with a routine change. So the part not lasting long enough may have vastly increased the costs if this damage has happened. (Mine went and the resulting repair work to a Vauxhall Astra was just over £1000, mainly in labour, compared to about £100 to replace a belt)

Key question is if any damage was incurred as a result of the belt going?

Absolutely, as this would be classed as reasonably foreseeable.

A cam belt costs around £15-£20 , the fitting will be anywhere from £50-£150 on top.

So a saving on the parts itself is rather poor.

There might be some help in the Parkers forum be warned tho the Scenic thread is huge !!

And if you look at the thread list, the amount of Renault posts is frightening
