One house I moved into, I was decorating the bedroom. Rather surprised to find that one wall was just a rather shoddily-constructed plasterboard "false" wall, when all the others were solid brick. Decided to remove it to make sure there was no mould or damp or whatever hidden behind it. Solidly attached to the brick wall behind it were 4 sets of handcuffs ( just positioned for, I imagine, each arm and each leg ), and several lengths of chain :o

An ancient uniform (possibly a band uniform) in a suitcase in the attic
  • When we moved into our first home, we found a giant air conduction system in the loft, along with an electric fire (that was bigger than the loft hatch). We never quite figured out what the air conduction thing was...
  • I have found a few things over the years and the strangest although Ebe Scrooge way out does me here was a clear bottle of something that I can only presume was urine stored in a outhouse, A few other bits to which were also quite strange including a bag full of manky old news papers all screwed up and what one can only believe was a child's doll but looked very strange indeed.
  • A box of school reports and a very heavy tortoise. We contacted the original seller (son of the deceased) and he said he wanted neither. They were his reports, so we were rather surprised (probably hated school lol). We thought the tortoise was a cheap metal, but we were wrong and in fact worth a few hundred pounds (1980's). He still lives with us :)

Not my own case, and rather sad, but ... "Granny".

Family had taken in gran, built her an annexe. As she became more frail, they moved within the village to new home, with better accommodation for her. Their original house was sold to a young couple.

The couple (who I knew rather better) came back one day, and were perturbed by the obvious burglar brazenly moving about in the house. It rapidly became apparent that granny had gone off for a constitutional around the village, and just returned "home". She was rather upset by the "burglars" arriving at her home...

Sad it may be that age comes with such handicaps, both families were rather tickled by the tale, gran was carefully returned/collected, and all parties retreated to the pub.
  • My son moved into a house and found a very sombre cleric in the attic, or at least, his portrait :). We actually had the painting valued and were told that it was a very good 'print' lol. The Bishop was identified and returned to his rightful family.

I was involved in the rewiring of a house some years ago.It had been inhabited by an old lady who had recently died. When we opened the cupboard at the top of the stairs. We found at least 100 rolls of toilet paper. Which proceeded to cascade down the stairs. We took a few each(with permission) and there were still dozens left over.
On another occasion I was involved in doing up an old house. In one bedroom a whole wall was covered with sewing pins stuck into the plaster. There must have been 1000's of them. We could not figure out a reason for their presence as they were not pinning anything to the wall that we could see.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.
