Always a good idea (and very MSE) to be wary when shopping anywhere. ;)

We don't know why 'duty free was allowed to charge 40% extra' - because the OP won't tell us why they just paid up instead of challengeing the price asked.

I did challenge the price... #10

They said the advertised price wasn't for my flight destination.

As I would have been 're-imburshed' of the difference, I purchased the bottle at the £26 price.

I would have just used the voucher on another trip.

Not sure why phatbear thought this was a wind-up.... it just highlights what people are being asked to pay, and like foolish me, agree to pay - lesson learnt in future.

Wendel - I did indeed saw the offer at Schiphol for €19.99 - purchased two bottles for less than £28

No, you didn't 'challenge' the price.
    This is post #10:

Price was £18.99 with a secondary price od £23.?? based on the average high street prices.

At time of purchase, I mentioned that the pricing was misleading, and was 100% positive that I could had reserved the item online for the same advertised price.

I was informed of the price-match guarantee, so thought that if this was the case, I would just submit a claim for the difference.

I checked on-line, and indeed, the website allows you reserve the item at the same advertised price - so again airport price misleading.

'Mentioning the price was misleading' is not 'challenging' the price - at least not in my book.
I'd have said the shelf label says £18.99, why are you asking me to pay £26?'
And on being told that the £18.99 price was for non-EU passengers, I'd have told them to put it back on the shelf.

Incidentally, this is the first time you've told us that the £18.99 price was for non-EU passengers, despite a number of posters - including the 2 posts below asking if that was the reason for the difference in price:

Shows how useless most "price promises" are.

Re the difference in the labelled price, was this anything to do with you travelling within the EU, perhaps the price was different for those travelling outside the EU, I think they still have to charge duty/VAT if you're not leaving the EU.

IIRC, the UK duty-free shops I've been into have separate prices - a lower one if you are travelling outside the EU and a higher one for travel within EU.

OP - why wouldn't you want the cash difference rather than a voucher??

This is one of the oddest threads I've ever seen.

It's not just phatbear - 1 other poster thinks it's a wind-up and another thinks it's a very odd thread.

There's a difference between being 'asked to pay' and actually paying.
I'm still really surprised that you didn't back away.

You could learn a lot from this website.
