web site analyser ?

Hi all,

I'm in the process of moving my site and, since I'm having trouble accessing my original site, I can't just move everything across.

This means that I'm uploading from my working copy on my own computer.

Unfortunately, the working copy also includes loads of files that I've removed from the actual on-line site, or are just test examples or working versions of not yet completed updates.

So... what I need is something that will analise my whole site and tell me, primarily, of...

..broken links

..orphaned items which are not linked to

A google search shows up all sorts of analisers, mostly for web trends, and those that check pages only *do* single pages - and I need to check my whole site.

Can anybody recommend some suitable software please?

I hope I'm not trying to teach you to suck eggs, but have you access to the control panel of your web host? If so, try taking a backup, then FTP it to the new site. If you have databases, copy them across too and use phpmyadmin to copy it to a new database.

It's a long shot, but if your site isn't too complicated, you could try something like Teleport Pro http://www.tenmax.com/teleport/pro/home.htm to scrape your old site. I haven't used it in years, but I seem to remember that it shows orphan files, broken links and the like...

As to actual analyzers, I don't know of any specifically, but thinking laterally you could look at some SEO tools, try http://www.webceo.com/ as an example. Their primary aim is to optimise your website for the search engines, and if its one thing that search engines hate, its broken links.

Bit of a shot in the dark really, but it might give you a few new ideas...

The problem here, as I said is that I cannot access my original site via FTP. I can't even refresh the view of my folders, much less backup or move files. This is why I need to be able to check my new site for links and orphans from my own working copy on my computer.

I think I may have seen that one. Unless I missed something (or have the wrong one) it does a page at a time <sigh> :)

I can check for possible broken links manually - though this is a pain over several hundred pages; but what I need most is to identify files on the server that are orphans so that I'm not using up unnecessary space.

Anyway, off again to look at webceo.com, thanks.

Dreamweaver uses FTP though doesn't it?

Can you see the site normally, using a web browser? If so, teleport pro will work for those pages you can see, I used it in the past when I needed offline copies of websites I hadn't made :)

Why can't you use FTP? Is it a problem at your end, or the host? If it's your end, I'd be happy to do it for you and send you the files (I'm a web developer so I'm used to doing this sort of thing)...

  • yes dreamweaver uses FTP, and about 5 other protocols.

ur not using it for the FTP goon.

im using it to check broken links. then when he wants it back up then u can use the FTP then.....:D
  • Try WinHTTrack at http://www.httrack.com/ to download your entire site to your computer. It follows links from a starting page (usually your home page index.htm/html/asp etc.). It reports broken links. It won't download orphaned pages because these aren't reachable (no link to them), therefore automatically ignoring them.
  • thought he had a copy already on his pc...

Yep, the webceo analyser does indeed check for orphans.

Me got lots of checking to do!

    Thanks very much :)

Nah... the problem is at theirs.

At least it started out that way. After their "help" it's now at both.

The teleport route might be better than the webceo in terms of workload, but not only do I host sets of help pages in their own directories which are NOT linked from my personal home pages - but I also host a number of images for use on other sites which again would show as orphans on a check. Things like images I use here on MSE and also on various Freecycle groups.

I've got more than two hundred pages to shift and check.

My web version of a booklet helping people with backpain problems, for example, is almost a hundred pages (+ images) alone...

I always knew it would be a lot of work to shift everything... I just didn't realise how much!

Not being able to fully check internally because a fair bit of stuff is used by remote sites is turning into a real pain, and it's those folders that there's the most "junk" in.

As I say - I've got all the files available for upload from here. I keep a full copy on my hard drive, have it backed up on a separate drive (NOT a partition), and then regularly dump a copy of the backup drive onto a DVD. It's not a case of missing stuff - only of easily identifying redundant files.

    Hm... :)

Does it access my site via FTP?

If so - *I* can't access it so I doubt that anything else can.

It's really identifying redundant and orphaned files on my new site (culled from my desktop copy) that I need, and as I say, not every section is linked from my personal home page.

    While I have:-

    mysite/index.htm +loads of linked pages

    I also have:-

    mysite/backpain/

    mysite/MSE/

    mysite/javascript novice help/

    mysite/Freecycle/

    mysite/FF extension help files/

Non of which will read back by looking at my main site and some of which can't be checked "internally" for orphans but only from those sites which are using the contents.

Oh well, it'll stop me getting bored, I guess :)
