UK flight cancelled - eligible for compensation?

My partner arrived at the airport for a domestic UK flight to discover his flight had been cancelled. The airline wouldn't say why. They offered to book him on a later flight to a different city, followed by a three hour bus journey to his original destination. He ultimately arrived at his destination about 4 hours late. Does this meet the criteria for compensation?

Depends on the reason for the calculation
If it was weather or ATC then no compensation due, if it was a technical problem, probably....
Search for Vauban's guide. If you look at the thread for the applicable airline you may find others that were on the same flight.
Flightstats should allow you to see if other flights between the airports were affected to give a clue on whether this was an issue affecting this one flight only

Just out of curiosity does flight delays compensation still apply if the flight was only 1 hr late but your on going journey took 3 hrs?.

No other flights from the airport were affected, there was no indication it was any external cause. As I say the airline refused to give a reason, we think maybe they hadn't sold enough seats on the plane.

Poppie, your question is the reason I asked in the first place. My understanding, which I hope others will confirm, is the that the key issue is how long it took you to arrive at your final destination, irrespective of method of travel.

No. The flight was cancelled, so the key issue for entitlement to compensation is the reasons for the cancellation.... have a good read of Vauban's guide.

the other check you could try is to put the flight details into one of the NWNF websites and see whether the response is claim or no-claim (e.g. EUClaim or Bott & co)
You don't need to use the services of a NWNF but they hold data and you will likely know if they say no-claim that it is not worth wasting time but claim would give a good indication of compensation due

Yes I understand that, and Vauban's guide was really helpful thanks, I should have said that provided other requirements for compensation are met, the calculation of the delay is based on the time of arrival at the final destination. So in my partner's situation, he was rebooked onto another flight which departed about an hour late, but he arrived more than three hours late, and for the purpose of calculating compensation it's the arrival time that matters, correct?

My partner actually asked the airline three times why the flight had been cancelled and they refused to answer. Presumably if there were "extraordinary circumstances" they would have indicated them at that point.

have you put the flight number into the NWNF websites?
When a flight is cancelled, compensation is due if new arrival is over 2 hours after original (rather than 3 for delay)

I tried to enter the flight details into the EU claim website and it wouldn't let me proceed because the replacement flight was arriving at a different airport to the original flight.

TrixA - just email Bott & Co and ask the question.
