    How do you know?

DVLA website, i got curious when they said how many untaxed cars there are now.

Same people that had cars towed by the police/DVLA approx 12 years back.

Had a big clampdown on untaxed and uninsured cars, not sure whether it was the police or DVLA that organised it.

I removed my disc because people kept telling me my tax had expired.

When my dodgy golf gets a dodgy MOT (ready to resell in 6months ), I wonder if I should tax it or risk it or let the poor git next owner do it (before they have to put in an £800 engine).
Why worry about it? With your dodgy mot you can tax your car. Assuming of course that you're not lying about getting a dodgy mot and are now considering driving it without an mot and tax..

Why would I lie, idiot? .
Idiot?. You bought an oil burning dog of a car. Threw money at it despite good advice not to and now want to drive it 100 miles a day without tax.

Imagine if everyone stopped paying car tax (or whatever relevant name it goes by now).

I bought a car on a Saturday a couple of weeks ago - taxed (and insured) it online before taking it on the road. Whilst it was parked outside my house on the Sunday, the DVLA road tax checker-uppers had been round, and left a sticker (unstuck but placed under the wipers) on my car telling my car was untaxed. I bumped into the follow up guy on the Monday and told him I had taxed it, and he basically said 'no problem mate, they only update us twice a week, so all we'd ever do us put a sticker under the wipers, we don't clamp private cars these days."
Maybe there was something on the system about the car being sold to a trader previously, or because it wasn't sorn'd they assumed it was going to be taxed? rather than trying to avoid paying through pretending it was off road. Who knows.

Was it just the two of them?

What happens if you SORN your car, have no MOT, don't have it insured and keep it parked on the public highway ........... Nothing whatsoever even if it is reported several times to DVLA by different people.

id be surprised if you can keep the car on the road for long. With ANPR and the terrorist threat in London you'll struggle to get by without be spotted by police.

SInce the Paris attacks I've been pulled over twice for insurance checks. I even heard one police chck my details on the radio. They checked for MOT, insurance, confirmed my name, address, DOB etc. Checked if there was anything outstanding or any notifications about me on the system. Did not recall any road tax issues but I'm sure that was something they'd checked if they're checking all these other stuff.
