what if you don't pay the road tax?

I read the other day that millions have not paid, possibly with the new system.
Of course, all the do-gooders round these parts will. If they don't, a psalm will say they go to hell (or get 0.5% knocked off their latest isa rate or some other palpitation inducing forfeit).
But, the rest of us?
When my dodgy golf gets a dodgy MOT (ready to resell in 6months ), I wonder if I should tax it or risk it or let the poor git next owner do it (before they have to put in an £800 engine).
Decisions, decisions.

In you case it's probably worth the risk. If they seize and crush your car what have you lost?0 -

Sounds scary. For all those millions of untaxed cars? Hope they haven't set a deadline. They can't even catch income tax dodgers.0 -
If the DVLA ran the tax office they would sent out non payment fines and let you argue about it after.
They will clamp your car at a moments notice. Then its a fine for this and another for that and then the backdated tax and etc etc.
Check the threads where people have paid what they thought was the tax and unclamping etc and then hit with another bill.
Although 2 of my neighbours seem to have not bothered recently. Curious to see how long they get away with it.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -

You do searches on all your neigboughs cars do you?0 -
Risk the poor new owner doing what? They won't have to pay the backdated tax. They'll pay from the month they buy it and you'll be pursued for the gap in tax!!0
