Why do you consider that post to be arrogant?
When considering buying what will probably be one of the most expensive purchases of your life, surely doing a little bit of research about the local facilities before signing on the dotted line isn't too much to expect is it?
When looking for this house off street parking was a "must have" tick box, rejected a few nice houses because they failed on that one.

Thanks everyone. You are all absolutely right, I should have really taken this into account when we bought the house. The main issue isn't right outside my house, it's around the corner (still the same road) by the entrance to the local park. That's where the biggest issue with lack of pavement due to the way the cars park.

It is also a very fair point regarding how the neighbourhs feel about it and I will take your advice and speak to them before going any further.

    Thank you again.

I like the people who put no parking signs in their window because they expect to be able to park outside their house.

those that put cones out are even better, I say a little prayer to my deity of choice when I come across some, jump out the car, move them and bag myself a prime parking spot, and annoy the resident to boot, its a win win situation ;)

even if there's other spaces i'll go out of my way to remove the cones and park there :D

I'd definitely canvass the neighbours. My street is usually full by 6pm on an evening, and other than the odd car from the repair garage at the end of the street, it's all residents. During the day, there are more cars in the street from the garage, but he puts most of them away at the end of the day.
Our local Neighbourhood watch fanatic wanted us all to canvass the council for resident only passes, but most didn't want it because it wouldn't really solve the problem of there not being enough parking for everyone who had a car, there wasn't really an issue with non-residents parking, and it would cost us all money, and there would be the issue of visitor parking.
Your case is different, as the main cause of your woes is non-residents, so more people may be up for it. But, as others have mentioned, once it becomes a resident permit zone, the permits will cost you, and there's not much you can do if the council decide to up the price every year. In these crippling financial times for local councils, they'll always hit the easiest targets if they need more money and could you afford not to pay for a permit? Might be worth speaking to a local councillor as they should be able to see the bigger picture - is there a car park at the station - is it too expensive thus putting off people parking there, is there a local council car park that could be better sign-posted to deter people from parking in the street etc. etc. The station car park might be half empty, but if they reduced their prices by 40% it might get full so they are better off and you might be better off.

Years ago there was a similar problem where we lived, had young children and often the only way to walk down the road with a buggy was in the road!
A neighbour started putting very sticky labels on the offending cars and ende up with a caution from the police for damaging property whereas the car drivers got nothing!
Glad we moved away as it got worse and worse.
