I am now thinking the best way to improve my credit score isn't to live on credit cards (paying things off in full etc etc) but to just change my bank!

Maybe try asking Nationwide. If I understand it right, they don't report old accounts because they didn't have permission to when it was opened. They may be able to start reporting it if you ask them.
It isn't a basic bank account is it? I think they don't report them because there are no credit facilities. If it is, you might have more luck asking them for an upgrade to a standard account so it gets reported.

Failing those things, I agree with the above that you'd probably be better opening an additional account so you can maintain your relationship with NW.

The length of time an account is held with a bank is scored well by lenders themselves. It's a question asked on application forms.

Spending money on credit cards and paying it back means zilch. As it proves nothing. Simply having a credit card and using it responsibly is sufficient.

I am now entitled to a free credit score with Experian as I have a Barclaycard.

Yet my Barclaycard is my only credit card that doesn't appear on my Experian credit report.

    Very odd!!
