I have just purchased a new car and it does not come with a cigarette lighter or as the salesman told me a 12v accessory. It just comes with a USB adapter built into the car.
I think this is progress. I can't remember using the 12v socket in my car for more than 7 years.

I think they should fit USB charging sockets (ie. just the power, not connected to the radio) at a few positions. Perhaps a couple on the dash top (for satnav), a couple at sensible places for phone charging, a couple in the back for the kids.

Must be a strange car that does not have a 12v socket........
Have the OP tried reading the instruction manual for the car.
Or post up the make & model ???

I wonder if the usb socket on this mystery model of new car has a very limited current limit, say 1 or 2 Amps. If so you may have trouble powering car vacs, tyre inflators etc even if they were 5v (they will be 12 V). Can't believe the manufacturer overlooked such a massive issue.

Old style cig lighters had a 15 A fuse.
  • TBH, I though every car now had a 12V socket in the boot, even if not on the dashboard!

Peeps want to run cooler-boxes for champers etc.

  • Most of the cheepo twin charging sockets run @ 15A maximum [for everything running off the battery] and in the case of USB's will give a max of 2.1A when used singly but only give 1.0A when used simultaneously, be aware that most cigarette lighter sockets are fused @ 10A - so plugging more than 10A will blow a protective fuse. So 12v x 15 amps = 180 watts max putting a typre pressure pump drawing 20A+ could certainly blow a fuse in both the car & the 12V air pump - so consider the wattage on the pump concerned.

Other vehicle types will have x3 12V outputs, one type IGN switched for cigarettes and the other direct wired @ 50W for appliances, my GV does. Best of luck.

The trouble is that I have a few accessories that I still need to use which have the cigarette lighter adapter as the charging base. I asked if they could fit a cigarette lighter into the car and they said they don't do that, but I could buy a socket with a USB lead.

I've been looking for one and cannot seem to find it. All I can find are the adapters that are inserted into the socket. I just need the entry socket and not the thing that looks like a "willy" :o

Does anyone know where I can get one please?

They are two different things, most plugs fit both if you wiggle them a bit, but the two are different sizes and load ratings.

What car is it? I don't know any car that doesn't come with one of these sockets.........
