Car cigarette 12v socket with USB lead

I have just purchased a new car and it does not come with a cigarette lighter or as the salesman told me a 12v accessory. It just comes with a USB adapter built into the car.

The trouble is that I have a few accessories that I still need to use which have the cigarette lighter adapter as the charging base. I asked if they could fit a cigarette lighter into the car and they said they don't do that, but I could buy a socket with a USB lead.

I've been looking for one and cannot seem to find it. All I can find are the adapters that are inserted into the socket. I just need the entry socket and not the thing that looks like a "willy" :o

Does anyone know where I can get one please?

Does it really exist? It would have to convert 5v to 12v.

What are the 'accessories' that you have a problem with?

A car battery charger. He said I should try Halfords. I looked on their website and couldn't see anything .

Anything with a high-current demand will blow a USB port.

A local fitter of car-alarms etc. will be able to fit a socket in a panel or under the dash and connect to a fused, switched 12V line

Even if the adapter you wanted existed, it wouldn't help as it wouldn't pass 12v from the charger to the battery through 5v USB port. For charging the battery you can get the socket fitted under the bonnet and connect it directly to the battery, possibly with a fuse.

Oh right. Thank you. I've also got an air pressure machine to pump up my tyres :o

A socket fitted under the bonnet will be fine for this too.

Wonderful. Thank you all for your help
  • This is very interesting. I have a satnav that uses the cigarette lighter socket - so if I buy a new car and it doesn't have this type of connector, what would I use to connect the satnav.
  • I think I may have answered my own question. Presumably, I can use the same cable I use to connect the satnav to the usb port on a computer. Sorry guys - It gets so confusing with all these different connectors
