it was when you said the ceed had bodykit and privacy glass it seemed as if looks more important than substance.

What difference does it make if the OPs wife wants an XC70?

It is hardly a car you buy to impress the neighbours!

And what difference does privacy glass make?

It hardly indicates a bling lifestyle!

But it does keep the rear of the car cooler in summer which means you don't have to use the AC so much and is also very good at controlling temps when carrying dogs.

And if you own an estate it means people can't easily see what you have in the boot when the car is parked.

An XC70 as a social statement?

    Really?

As a practical robust family car?

    Absolutely.

    Don't they do a V50 T5 in FWD then?

I'd understand your logic of that question more, had someone suggested they buy a Mondeo instead of the XC.

    Re read my post.

    Repeat if needed.

OP asks about an XC70 as his wife's likes one and would like one.

As usual people accuse them of being a snob and wanting to show off to the neighbours.

Others talk of cars that don't exist, 2wd XC70.

As if you are looking for a V70 you don't ask about an XC70, and if you want to recommend a V70 then don't suggest a 2wd XC70 as it doesn't exist.

The talk of other cars is irrelevant to the thread.

The OP didn't ask for suggestions on a diesel estate car he asked about the XC70 specifically.

As far as you go Loskie?

Is it my problem you posted wrongly.

Since when is advising getting a 2wd XC70 mean you were talking about a V70.

The excuse that they share common parts of pointless.

As that would mean a Ford Galaxy could be considered a V50 due to using the same engine. Or even a Citroen and Peugeots for the same reason.

But Loskie would rather resort to insults than admit he posted wrongly:rotfl:

It seems about £1000 dearer than other xc70's on Autotrader.

After a quick look at the advert it would seem the XC70 the OP is looking at is specced fairly well.

And advertised price is rarely the price paid. Traders always aim high. To do otherwise is giving money away.
  • Look for a mkiii very Late 2004 early 2005 onwards, which in this price range, that money buys, they dropped that silly cross country boot decal as well.
The mk iii is improved quite a bit from the mkii, little visual change.
Look at year of manufacture not first registered as some mk ii hung around on forecourts un-registered until mid 2005

The problems with the viscous couplings of the mkii are sorted (most mkii are only working in 2wd unless regularly repaired ), those terrible rock hard seats you needed a cushion to see over the steering wheel are also gone.
The power is up to 182 BHP on the mk iii , mpg rises about 4 overall more round town and its a lot quicker,, the mkii is a sluggish away at 11.7 0-60.

Can you not see the XC70 is a 4x4 version of the V70?

Ok let's go by your logic if the 4x4 transit isn't a transit van then what is it? A Vauxhall Cavalier. :rotfl:

If you buy a Mkii XC70 it will most likely be a 2wd, it was built as a 4wd but the chances of the coupling working are next to none, they were near on impossible to keep running in 4wd, even many that own them don't realise its not send power to the back. .

    Since when is a V70 an XC70?

This is a thread about the XC70

    My point stands.

Saying just buy a 2wd version of an XC70 is as relevant as saying buy the saloon version.

There being no saloon version of the XC70, the saloon is an S80

Just because they share a platform doesn't make them the same car or relevant to the OPs needs.

If they want an AWD Volvo why are people talking about different cars.

valid point, why go for the xc model if you're not actually going off road. The v70 is the equivalent non-offroad car.

Do you need to be so aggressive?

I knew exactly what the poster meant when he suggested the 2wd version of an XC70 - you're just being pedantic and have managed to derail the thread in a childish attempt at scoring points.
