    It's called a V70.

    Since when is a V70 an XC70?

This is a thread about the XC70

    My point stands.

Saying just buy a 2wd version of an XC70 is as relevant as saying buy the saloon version.

There being no saloon version of the XC70, the saloon is an S80

Just because they share a platform doesn't make them the same car or relevant to the OPs needs.

If they want an AWD Volvo why are people talking about different cars.

The V isn't and XC but someone raised the question whether they need AWD. You'd be hard pressed to ague the V70 is not a FWD version of the XC70 as it obviously is. When it comes to saloons why name the S80 over the S60 which shares the same platform?

The op asked for opinions, is yours anymore valid than anyone else's? No.

    A V70 is not an XC70

Or are you saying that any vehicle that shares a platform is in fact the same vehicle?

Say somebody wanted an AWD version of the V50 T5, pretty rare car to be honest, if somebody said why not buy the 2wd version would that mean they have just been given advise to bay a Ford Focus ST?

As by your logic they are the same car.

    Don't they do a V50 T5 in FWD then?

I'd understand your logic of that question more, had someone suggested they buy a Mondeo instead of the XC.

    I've been Money Tipped!
I have owned an XC70 and a V70 - they have essentially the same chassis, shell, seats, load space etc (depending on spec levels).

I agree that if the AWD ability is not needed then a V70 would be a better bet as it is less 'complicated'. The XC70 is very heavy on tyre wear and insurance can be higher too. Also, the XC70 ground clearance is not that much higher than the V70 so it's good in snow but not so much for muddy fields or rugged ground.

Also the 70 range had an issue with gearboxes at some point - I can't remember the exact issue as it was so long ago - mine was fixed with a dealer contribution. Also, the ETM was discussed on Watchdog.

Would I buy another older XC70/V70 - yes, BUT....

They are heavy on petrol so a diesel is better for the wallet. The specs are good compared to others of the same age and, most importantly, the safety levels are far higher (again for that age of vehicle).

It's all down to whether an AWD is essential or whether it is just the estate that is the lure.

An estate is the main thing really, for the dog, but it's got to appeal to her.

It's replacing a Kia Cee'd estate, which she liked as it had a body kit, tinted rear windows and a nice interior (never seen another one like it to be honest, it looked a lot better than the usual ones you see running around).

I'd bought a second car and there's a perfectly good Passat estate here for her, but she's never liked it.

AWD isn't essential, she just likes the look of the car.

That's one pretty fussy dog you have there ;).

I loved all the Volvos I had - right up to the V50 I've just gotten rid of.

My favourite though - and these are dirt cheap now as they were discontinued on 2004, was an old shape V40. The T4 version was fast, smooth and the body small enough to be really agile.

Closely followed by the V70 T5 - that was good fun as it looked like an old man's slogger but went like stink - I miss that car.

from what you say OP AWD will not benefit you just add to costs. Just get a decent 2wd V70, Toyota Avensis or Skoda Octavia although it sounds as if your mrs is quite hung up on looks and badge.

She doesn't like the look of the v70, or the v40, just the XC. She's definately not a badge snob lol. She just wants something that she likes the look of.

Her last Vehicles have been a 2002 Grand voyager, a 1999 Passat Estate (different from my current one, she didn't like that either and it was a bit of an impulse buy to replace the chrysler) and the 2008 Kia Cee'd. Don't think any of them are bought for the badge or to impress the neighbours. :)

The xc70 the OP is looking at is newer, cheaper, and has 4wd, a towbar* and more toys by the look of it, I'd go for the xc70.

*this could mean that it has been used to pull a 2 tonne horsebox with two Shire horses in though, so it can be a mixed blessing. Normally you remove the towbar and put it on eBay to hide the hard life of the car.
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

(except air quality and Medical Science ;))
