Depends which 6s you get. I pay 7.99 for that tariff particular with EE sim only - so your phone is costing you £648 - my 64GB 6s was £619, plus I'm on a 12 month not 24 month contract, which has it's own benefits.

Plus you are seeing a DD for just £7.99 a month instead of £35, savings are only good if you are going to spend it at some point.
If circumstances change detrimentally then the customer only has to worry about the monthly.

Think people posting on this thread are slightly behind the times as this week's Black Friday deals have now made getting a 6S on contract the cheapest option.

I've just ordered an ee phone for £35 per month with unlimited texts & calls plus double speed 4GB data, I couldn't beat £40 per month buying it out right as I usually do even with a Giffgaff sim etc on inferior networks. It has the added bonus I don't have to lay out £500+ on the phone in a lump sum.

I concede that it's quite a good deal, however it is only the 16GB model.

I have been able to get the 64GB model with admittedly only a 2GB allowance on Three, which if I keep for 2 years then it has cost me £32.65 per month.

£38 if I had gone for unlimited data.

    Outright any day.

I switched my OH's SIM only deal yesterday from £12 (unlimited everything) to £1.75 per month (after automatic cashback). The new deal is no longer unlimited but the limits are very good. 1000 minutes, unlimited texts and 3GB data.

Mind telling us which network your OH is with?

Theres always the odd deal that can work out cheaper. One phone i got on contract worked out cheaper than buying it outright. But most of the time its cheaper to buy it outright and get a separate contract for the airtime.

It's a long way away yet but I'm probably going to buy the next iPhone outright and go SIMO.

If you play your cards right and shop around (especially with cashback deals) I guess it pays dividends ultimately?

I bought my iPhone 6 from Apple using their 0% finance deal they do at Xmas. Paid it over 10 months and got sim only deal from O2 for £8 a month. Was cheaper than getting the phone on a contract.

Normally outright is the cheapest way of buying an iPhone but the recent contract deals on the 64GB iPhone 6s were cheaper if you consider that you'd still need to pay for either a SIM only contract or PAYG each month.

For example there was a deal for a gold 64GB iPhone 6s on Vodafone which was £100 upfront and £26 per month which included Unlimited Calls, Unlimited Texts, 2GB Data. Given this phone retails at £619 from Apple, the contract worked out at £4.38 per month.

I was sorely tempted but being MSE, I stuck with my iPhone 5 and Three 321 PAYG SIM.
  • I bought my iPhone 5S outright, to save money overall, plus so I could avoid a long 24m contract. I would do this again without hesitation, so it's not 'locked' to a particular network. Apple are good at fixing any issues too. Now there are so many cheaper SIM only tariffs, like iD mobile, I'd always choose this route. Don't like big monthly bills.
  • If you taking out a 24 months contract surely it doesn't matter if the phones locked to the network or not, well not at least for 2 years and by which time I'll be looking for an upgrade anyway, or you just get the network to unlock it for you?

As far as not liking big bills surely laying out £500/600 in the first place is a pretty big bill! Unless you are careless if is fairly easy with apps to make sure you don't get an unexpected bill but surely you can get them on a sim contract anyway?

As I said I don't think there's much in it between paying upfront or monthly now and the latter has the advantage that you don't have to pay £500/600 in one payment.

That's okay if you are sure you will have the income to service a ~£50 a month (depending on what you need of course) direct debit. Personally I prefer to get the phone cost out of the way, and only have to cover a few quid a month.

I've sometimes thought about paying my Council Tax off at the beginning of the year, but what stops me is giving them the benefit of my money for longer than I have to. It's not quite the same thing with a phone contract!
