I am still unhappy regarding the questions asked today. I have said I will decide after xmas, Anyway my current meters were only installed in 2008. But if anything goes wrong with these. There will only be the smart meters to replace them. As the older meters are no longer being made. SSE will install new version of smart meter. If I decide to have one installed.0

My electric meter was only installed 3 months previously and the gas meter was less than 2 years old.
I contacted them and asked for the smart meters to be fitted and they were more than keen on the idea and came to fit them on the day & time that I chose, the fitter was very efficient and finished within an hour.0 -
We had a Smart Meter fitted for our electricity. They arranged a time over the phone, they arrived exactly at the day and time arranged and like Torbex it was fitted within the hour.
I no longer have to give meter readings and now all the readings on my bills are exactly as the meter reads. No more estimated bills. And was given a handy little monitor to keep in the kitchen that tells me what I am using etc. They set that up for me too.
ETA. I was not required to pay for any of the equipment or the little monitor.*3.36 kWp solar panel system,10 x Ultima & 4 x Panasonic solar panels, Solaredge Inverter *Biomass boiler stove for cooking, hot water & heating *2000ltr Rainwater harvesting system for loo flushing *Hybrid Toyota Auris car *RIP Pingu, Hoppy, Ginger & Biscuit *Hens & Ducks* chat thread. http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.php?t=52822090 -

Have you asked them when the roll-out is?
I contacted my supplier (Hydro) last year about this time and they said that it would be at least 2 years for my area but I got the letter less than 6 months later.0 -
Has anyone with a smart meter noticed higher bills? This is my main concern.0

Not been in long enough to notice much change yet.
My summer electric was slightly down but gas was about normal.
The meter wont make any changes but watching the monitor might.0 -
I have heard horror stories about the bills going up after smart meters installed. One thing that does concern me is how safe my data is. As SSE use Vodaphone and they have had a data breach in recent months. I might wait a while before getting one in.0

I'd be more worried about HMRC, the Police or NHS losing or misusing my data than the electricity company.
I can't think that there's many people out there who'd care when I turned my kettle on or had the nounce to work out where I lived and deduce that I might not be at home. by analysing my electricity consumption - they can usually work it out from whether the lights are on or if the car is on the drive.
Whereas the others quoted know a hell of a lot more about me, my health & my finances than either Vodafone, TalkTalk or the other phone or electricity companies.
You are at more risk by using a credit card than worrying about who might know how much leccy or gas you useNever under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers0 -

You seem to be 'over thinking' this, it's only a meter, it wont do you any harm or change your life.
I used to read meters for a living and seeing some of the wallys that worked along side me, I was glad to take them out of the loop.0
