I have read this in the small print for smart meters. After getting a letter from SSE about them
[UThe customer may be subject to an upfront or one off charge, if prior to installation visit he/she expressly requests the installation of equipment that exceeds the minimum requirements of the Smart Metering System, technical specification, and (b) and enters into a contract for provision of such equipment.[/U]
Can anyone help with this?

if you want extra's, you pay for them.
I have had both meters switched to 'smart' by SSE and it cost me nothing.0 -
I would have thought it was self explanatory.IT Consultant in the utilities industry specialising in the retail electricity market.
4 Credit Card and 1 Loan PPI claims settled for £26k, 1 rejected (Opus).0 -
I am a bit thick when it comes to the tech side of things.
What extras?0 -
What are these options for which we can pay extra ? Have them painted pink?Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0

What extras?
They were detailed in the letter that I got which I have since thrown out
The only one I can remember was an extra monitor so that you could set them one for each utility.0 -
I have read my letter and it does not contain any details for extras. I have emailed SSE for some clarification.0

I managed to get this information from SSE regarding the above. There will be a charge if you need your meters moving. This means if your meter box is not large enough to house the smart meter in. I did ask for a price for this and was told it is on a case by case basis. I was told as my electric meter was outside in a box it should be ok. But SSE would not commit to anything without having someone come out to check. As my gas meter is inside the house, housed in its own box. Plus I was also told both meters need to be no more than 30 feet apart. Mine are more than this. So this leaves questions. I am not happy with the response. So I will only get a meter when I have too.
Does anyone know the exact size of a smart meter?0 -

Surely the exact size of a smart meter is irrelevant if your meters are more than 30 feet apart!
As far as I'm aware no suppliers are currently fitting the latest spec SMET2 meters that allow transfers between different suppliers yet.
The introduction of smart meter is a total fiasco. The government should have forced the industry sort out all of the various problems before any were installed and then they could have been made compulsory for all.
Just say thanks but no thanks.0 -
