Baby Gift

The first one of my friends is having a baby at end of September and it is her last week at work next week. I want to get her and the new baby something but as this is my first baby buying experience can anybody give me any suggestions. I was thinking of something that she will find useful for the baby and something to treat her.

Thanks

OH and I bought a nappy cake for our friends new baby. They absolutely loved it as it was something useful that would save them a few quid when money is always tight.
I have seen some nappy cakes where they put in a bar of choc and some champagne for Mum too http://www.sweetbabycakes.co.uk/Champagne.htm or one like this http://www.sweetbabycakes.co.uk/mums_gifts.htm

It depends if you want to spend that much but there are people on here who have made beautiful looking nappy cakes themselves at a fraction the cost plus you can really personalise it to suit your friend
  • Nappy cakes are a really good idea i've never seen these before - a good idea if i need to buy something for any of my friends/families' babies!

i would buy your friend her favourite perfume or bath oil or face mask etc for her to pamper herself with and something practical for the baby like bibs or vests say aged 6 -12 months (she will get loads of new born stuff but not always enough for later on) or some baby wipes, sudocream, baby bath or baby oil etc - all these things cost money and are mostly essential - you could put them in a nice gift bag

  • Not so much for now but I've bought a copy of The Times on the day the baby was born and tied it with the appropriate coloured ribbon......a bit different and something that is likely to be kept.

I am planning on giving baby gowns for the next baby being born in our circle of friends. I have 3 of them now for DS, and they were fabulous for overnight changes in the early days. It also helps to differentiate between day time naps in his daytime clothes, and something completely different to wear overnight.

    Something like these:

We got these (from a different company) and they look as good now as they did when we got them 7 months ago:

When anyone of my friends or family have a baby i do a basket of baby toiletries, i.e baby bath, shampoo, wipes etc etc. And other bits and peices that they will need. It always comes in handy as everyone tends to buy clothes, which are useful in there own right, but toiletries are also very useful. They are normally on offer in boots or superdrug. I have three on the go at the moment.

Edit: forgot to put that i normally buy a nice wicker basket for it that way nappies or toys can be kept in it after everything has been used.

Clothes for baby always come in very handy - you seem to go through so many changes of clothing in the first few weeks.

Some pampering gifts for your friend would also be very welcome...perhaps you could make up a 'cheque book' for her too, where you could offer to babysit/do the hoovering/make dinner, etc.

When I first had my little one the thing I craved most was time. I was given a lovely Champneys pampering gift set, which sadly I never really got round to using until DD was almost a year old...

when my friends are having a baby what i do is when i'm out and about i pick up baby toiletries that are on bogof, use one for my son and the other goes in a drawer, i get toiletries and cotton wool, bibs and baby socks in the sales, baby wipes and nappies when on offer and feeding things like beakers, bowls and spoons etc, all either on bogof or reduced. i then buy a cheap basket for a few pounds, put all the stuff in the basket, wrap it in cellophane ( if you go into thorntons or somewhere like that tell them it is for a raffle they may give you some or let you buy a small amount) and put a few ribbons round the top. It looks lovely and is very greatly appreciated rather than clothes the baby will never wear! i would have loved this as a gift for me : )

This was one of my best presents- A voucher for someone to come round and take a cast of Tabitha's hand and feet when she was 3 weeks old. The casts were then painted bronze and framed. I paid for the sets to be doubled up and gave one to my mum for christmas :T
