  • I have 2 pints delivered daily by the milkman but always run out towards the end of the day, I keep a box of tesco value dried milk in my cupboard for when we run out so I can still have my cuppa before I go to bed :)

I use UHT skimmed milk - just the "whatever shop im in" value range at 38p a litre. Some people dont like the taste but i dont notice a difference as i drank fresh skimmed milk anyway. I used to buy one 2 pinter a week on average and end up throwing some away cos never got to the bottom of the bottle before it went off!

    So at current prices:
    Fresh 2pt skimmed milk = 66p (5.8p a 100ml = 58p a litre)
    UHT 1ltr skimmed milk = 38p (3.8p a 100ml = 38p a litre)

    Saving 20p a litre! :)

OBVIOUSLY if you dont like value skimmed milk UHT milk it wont help as "non value" UHT milk is about the same as fresh milk if not a bit more because of the "2 for" offer the supermarkets have on at the mo on fresh milk!

    Hiya,

I use the UHT value milk, too. Oh practically ladles it into coffee and can't tell the difference anyway.

My baby is still on SMA.

I buy 2 x 4 pints skimmed (for me) and 2 x 4 pints whole milk (for DD) per week - currently on offer in Tesco, so £4 per week.

However, OH is lactose intolerent, so I also buy soya milk - 3 x 94p. (More if I'm planning to cook with it).

Not a huge amount out of my shopping budget.

Might be worth looking at other breakfasts and meals that contain less milk to lessen the budget O/P.

There are two adults in our huse and we use 4 litres per week costing £1.20.
That is UHT S/Skimmed and I love it.

Spare a thought for the farmers, please.

Below is an extract from an article in the "Guardian" earlier this year - if this goes on there won't be any milk in the shops - or to put it another way, if you think it is expensive now ..................

"The price of milk in the shops has risen roughly 20% in five years, from just over 44p a litre in 2002 to just over 53p in 2007. Yet the price paid to farmers has fallen.
In 1995, producers got 24.5p a litre for their milk; the average today is 18p a litre, which represents a loss of more than 3p on every litre. The result has been a huge rise in supermarket profits from milk, but an exodus from dairy farming, which is still accelerating."

    My highlighting:

How long can any business go on like this ?

Good grief! What are you lot doing with all that milk!?
There are only two of us but we average about two pints a week, sometimes less, sometimes more if my husband has a craving for Nesquick...! Mind you, we only eat cereal once in a blue moon. I have boxes of muesli and Special K for when I am trying to avoid bread, but generally I think there is something undefinably gross about cereal...

I don't buy milk. I live alone and find if I want some, I've got none or it's gone off .... and if I have some then I don't want/need it.

And as much as I love it, I can't just drink it because I can only drink the silvertop which is about 350 calories a pint I think.

So a number of years ago I gave it up. Now I drink black coffee and I eat cereal dry.

However, when I was growing up, living with my parents, we'd have a pint a day with an extra one for Sundays to make the yorkshire pudding.

That was with 2 adults and 2 teenagers.

would longlife (UHT) or powdered milk be an option for some things (the things where you dont really taste it anyway - in drinks, cooking etc), to lessen the amount of fresh stuff you buy.

also, have you tried buying more full fat milk and watering it down for a SS consistancy for you, leaving the other part of the bottle FF for your DD? as opposed to buying both SS and FF. technically this way you would be getting more milk for less, at least until DD is old enough not to need FF anymore.
