Money Moral Dilemma: Should I share my referral bonus?

If you had a prior arrangement where you'd agreed to split the bonus if he got the job, then fine split it. Otherwise it is yours to keep, just like he keeps his salary. This is your payment for taking the time and effort (accepted that it was minimal effort) and you do not need to split it.
If he grumbles and complains, then he is not a real friend.0 -
I was in this position earlier in the year. A friends daughter was looking for work and needed a helping hand. I referred her via my HR department and she got the job. My referral bonus was £600 gross and was split into two payments the first paid after three months employment and the second after six months. I split the net payment 50:50 with her. My ethos behind it was that she's 21, has a long working road before her and she may do the same for someone else in the future when they need a helping hand! What goes around comes around and it was money I wasn't banking on receiving.
Interestingly though, she emailed me yesterday to find out how it works as she intends to put a friend forward herself - will watch with interest as to whether she does split any funds received.
To be fair though I guess its personal choice, but in the instance of the original post it does read as if the job applicant was approached by the 'referrer' to ask if they'd make sure their name was mentioned upon application - if this is the case then I think its only fair to split the money - as its not as if the 'referrer' would have received anything without the 'applicant' agreeing to using his name, they were applying for the role in the first instance without any assistance from the 'referrer'.
Hey ho - good and bad karma comes from your own actions. You'll never change the world in big steps - its all done one at a time!0 -
Yes, you should share it. Because your friend has enabled you to make money by referring your name. In the same way, they are making money because you referred them to the job. Ergo, as has been suggested above, they should give you half their salary. That's definitely how this should work.0

There's a lot of comments about the OP 'helping' the other person to get the job. All they did was tell them about it! The friend did all the hard work of being considered suitable for the role. I would absolutely have split the money - no question.0

I think that the one-off referral bonus should be shared 50/50.
After all the friend who got the job is getting multiple and greater wages for a much longer time, so when they share their wages you'll be up on the deal!
They are sharing their wages with you surely, aren't they?!?!0 -

The friend wasn't doing the OP a favour, though. It was the other way around. If the friend hadn't got the job, the OP would be no worse off.

And that thread was yet another 'MSE weekly dilemma.
Who are these people that MSE post on behalf of?
How do they get in touch with MSE mods?
Why can't they ask the question themselves?0 -
A friend of mine submitted a speculative CV for me, told me about the referral and said they would split it with me if I got a job. I refused the offer straight away! Would never have dreamt to ask them to share.
The referral fee is yours, it's completely up to you whether you want to split it or not. Personally, I would split it with a good friend who I know needs the cash, but not with a friend who can live without it. And it would also depend on how badly I needed the money. Best compromise is to take them out for dinner to celebrate but tell them you were taxed on it too, so it wasn't as much as you expected and you really need what's left for your MOT/broken washing machine/broken laptop etc.0 -
Well found! :T

In the weekly email, you click a link to comment on this thread. Immediately after this is a link which allows you to "suggest a weekly MMD" via email so it's possible to email the mods directly. I think the mods post it if it has been submitted by email.0
