Money Moral Dilemma: Should I share my referral bonus?

    If you feel it might cause a bit of resentment then share it.


    But then would he share his wages as you made him the referral in the first place?


    When I last went on hols with a relative, we both have cashback account and nectar cards but as she was at my home and we were booking from my expedia account, she agreed to just use my cashback account. when the money came through I treated her to a meal.

    I did share some of the last referral bonus I got, that was mainly due to the bonus being significant, I was expecting £500 but due to a re-shuffle of the banding and the level she started at it was a lot more.

    Depends if you agreed in advance to split it, but in general I'd say keep it for yourself.

    Perhaps you need to remember the reason for the bonus in the first place. It costs many thousands for a company to use a recruitment agency to find new employees (e.g. 10% of the annual salary) - and so the bonus is paid out to the referrer as a "thank you" for saving them this money.
  • I work at a tourist site which offers existing members vouchers for referring others who subsequently join. Some share it, some hand it all over, others keep it. So make up your mind and stick to it!


    If you feel really guilty for keeping it then buy them a drink or a meal as others have suggested but if it is the new employee asking they need to show more gratitude for your help in getting them a job.
  • I don't see the need to share, unless previously agreed.

    If it was me, I would be glad to have been referred and subsequently appointed to the job. That is the best result.

    There is nothing to understand: it is called a bounty payment for a reason!

    The firm could have constructed an incentive scheme that split the bounty wiith the new member of staff as a golden hello. But they did not and the new recruit needs to get over it and instead acquaint themselves with the real world.

    Absolutely now way! It's your perk and paid to you. What sort of a person asks for that after you referred them for a job? Tell them to take a hike.

  • Certainly not! What kind of friend is this person to even suggest this? Your "friend" is the one who should be having a moral dilemma, not you.
  • I don't see why you should split it. Is he going to share the job with you?
