Christmas gift ideas for 17 year old boy

Every year in Aberdeen the Instant Neighbour charity runs an appeal for Christmas presents for children who otherwise wouldn't get anything.
This year I picked up a gift tag for a 17 year old boy so now I'm looking for gift ideas. I was thinking about getting him something warm (hat, gloves or scarf), chocolate coins (because everyone should have chocolate coins at Christmas), a book (but I've got no idea what books a 17 year old boy might like) and maybe some smellies. It sounds a bit dull but without knowing the boy it's all just a stab in the dark.
Do you have any suggestions?

Some great ideas on this website http://www.mandmdirect.com/01/details/CO1108/Converse-Knitted-Bobble-Hat-Navy including that hat in the link, they also have scarves and gloves too in the same make and other popular makes which I'm guessing a 17 year old would love?
Although, if you had to send anything back, returns aren't free, that's the only thing.
Personally I'd stay clear of the book. Book tastes do tend to be fairly individual.0 -
Well lynx would go down well, perhaps a giftset. Books, Hunger Games are popular at the moment. If you have a Works near you, they tend to do very reasonable books/sets.
Have a look on the celebrations board, theres a few threads about teens / men presents. Please do not quote spam as this enables it to 'live on' once the spam post is removed.

My 16 y/o loves lego men.. he has jars full. hahaha
He likes little bits he can fiddle with.. those squishy keyring things, wind up critters (they need 2 so they can race them)
He doesn't wear scarves and rarely a hat.
sunglasses .. regardless of sun situation.
novelty socks.. and he adores the heat holder socks.
wallet, key chain, hair products. and we can never have enough headphones in here!! (5 teens!)
bits that were 'all the rage' when they were little are nice little novelty products too.. mine had pokemon bits, beyblades for example.
silly books like 'how to know everything' type things always amuse. Simons Cat books are amusing too.. my partner gets me those.LB moment 10/06 Debt Free date 6/6/14Hope to be debt free until the day I dieMortgage-free Wannabee (05/08/30)6/6/14 £72,454.65 (5.65% int.)08/12/2023 £33602.00 (4.81% int.)0 -
As a mum to two boys, I wouldn't bother with a book or gloves.
I'd go with a beany hat, and a Lynx giftset. Maybe some comics rather than a book, such as something from the Marvel universe, e.g Captain America.
You haven't said what the budget is.0 -
I can never go wrong with the latest guinness book of world records, my lad is about to turn 18 and he will be getting that as per usual x#JusticeForGrenfell0

Thanks everyone. I have really set a budget yet (not very MSE). I do have money set aside for Christmas though so this will just come out of that pot.
TK Maxx had some nice beanie hats in for a reasonable price. I was just thinking something warm because we're in the North East of Scotland. It snowed here the other night, horizontally because of the wind coming off the North Sea. Brrrr. :snow_aug
I like the idea of silly books or the Guinness Book of Records. Some novelty Christmas socks are a good shout too.
I purposely choose an older child because an old colleague of mine said this appeal shouldn't include children 16 an older. She reckons that they're old enough to accept they're getting hee haw for Christmas. Bah humbug.0 -

So it does. Cineworld vouchers might be a good shout then.0 -
My son is 20 this month.
I would suggest
aftershave
shaving foam/razor
socks
boxers
sports gloves / hat (nike/adidas) sports direct perhaps
football socks
cinema voucher
Nandos voucher
My son doesnt read a lot (only to do with uni), he plays on his xbox, tho the games are expensive.0
