How much do you save each month?

Options
Hi all,

Genuine question. Just curious about what people tend to save each month. I.e once all bills and expenses are deducted how much do you have left over?

The reason I ask is I'm not sure what to aim for when I budget. I'm targeting 500 a month which I think is good as I'm the only earner as my wife looks after our child.

Thanks all

  • Usually around £1000 but had some bad months this year and been saving more like £600.

The best month i save £2900, but customers like that one don't come along very often haha.

Single with no kids so my bills are low, although my food bill is about £400a month haha.
  • About £850, but it depends, I try to transfer it OUT of my bank account on pay day to prevent it disappearing. If monies in your account you easily spend it.

If I ditched extras, Sky etc, I could reach £1000, but you have to have some quality of life.!

only started so around 150 a month, but aiming for £500 when I sort out my budget.

But apparently you need to save at least 250 to 'get anywhere'. I don't know where but... that's what they said on the news like...

I have one of those terramundi pots since jan though that I put all cash into that I arrive home with every day regardless of the amount. I'm amazed I've stuck to it to be honest as I'm dreadful with cash.
  • Problem is James, everybody on this site is loaded, yeah you may get some genuine replies but your going to get a few, imaginative... figures spouted here which doesn't give a true reflection on society, I think it's worth remembering that the rough average wage per year is £28000 .. or around £1800 take home pay per month...

    What is "loaded"?:money:
  • my take home is usually £2400 but can be more, the best was £3500. Although i am self employed so can be less if i don't do much work or more if i take stuff in brown envelopes.

I'm not loaded though, just slightly richer than the average bear

The average wage take home i thought was 400 a week, so 25k a year.

I guess the 28k figure is if you include london in the data which is not useful because london is weird.
  • I was on about this with a friend the other day for saving. I think the aim is to save a third, spend a third on bills and a third on every day living. It all depends where you live and what you earn in all honesty. I've saved a lot this year, but it's only because of my holiday. When I get back I won't be, I'll be living more and saving some but not as mad as I have been

  • Our combined monthly take home pay is £3500. We aim to leave £1000 in our joint current account to cover direct debits and a bit extra for other bills like annual insurances, home maintenance etc and food. £1250 is saved in cash and stocks and shares isas and regular saver accounts, £500 is divided between our two personal accounts for personal spends (clothes etc) and £750 goes into an internet saver account for holidays and large items of expenditure and if there is a balance left at the end of the year it gets transferred into savings along with cash gifts and annual bonuses. On average we aim to save between £12k and £18k per annum.

This is the perfect thread for people to boast about how wealthy they are. I don't know why I opened it really as I have no interest in other people's situation or giving anything other than the bare minimum of mine.
