How recently are you talking? That limit came in a few years ago, I've had BMWs, Volvos, VWs and subarus above the so called 155 mph limit.

I have already edited my post as I anticipated that you or someone else would ask when - I think it was 2006 or 7 or thereabouts.

There are a few exceptions of course as it wasn't a 100% deal.

But all current 3 and 5 series are definitely limited.

I'm talking six years after that and it easily exceeded 155.

So someone had removed or altered the limiter then. ;)

Maybe, maybe not. But I'm talking four different manufactures and all four have exceeded 155 all built after that date you claim. I honestly thought it was earlier than that date. Two of the makes I am talking about more than one car so are you saying all limiters are removed? I'd say it's more of a case of they're not playing by the rules. But then no doubt you'll claim you've had a 530 that you could only get 155 out of.

A recently built (last 8 or 9 years or so) one won't - not even downhill with a following wind. ;)

Unless you take the speed limiter off of course.

BMW will remove the limiter, but your warranty goes out the window. They will need to see evidence of your intended motorsport use of the car and your competition driving licence too.

All German built cars now have their speed limited to 250kph (155mph)

This was part of an unwritten agreement from German car manufacturers (and a few others including Italy I believe) in order for the German Government to abandon mandatory universal speed limits on the Autobahnen.

There were many things involved in the discussions - every Lande now has stretches of unlimited Autobahn, and every Lande has some stretches with permanent limits below 130kph - the recommended maximum speed.

Maybe this limit is like the limit of 125bhp for motorcycles. Late 80s early 90s that came in.

    Nobody complies with that now.

As for your edit, I'm talking road use cars not Motorsport and no competition licence. :)

Measured on the cars' speedos or with independent (calibrated, or at least GPS) equipment?

(I've certainly read suggestions that the E39 M5 was electronically limited to 155mph in 6th gear, but could exceed it in 5th.)

    Calibrated and independent.
