They can yes, but the car behind with some idiot in Audi on his phone, or a woman leaning between the seats to "coochy coo" the spawn, won't have seen said pheasant and when you brake harshly your car will be in a lot more mess than if you'd only hit the bird.

And just to reinforce the point even more, if there was a busload of school children behind that, which swerved to avoid the audi, went down a bank and crashed into a group of OAPs on a day out, there'd be carnage. How could you ever forgive yourself for braking for a bird?

    !!!!ing pheasants.

There will likely have been a nun with a basket of hungry kittens, just waiting to pick up the dead bird.

    Kittens love pheasants.;)

    70mph is the limit
Good point - after all, if he'd only been doing 70mph, then the duck would probably have only been slightly stunned by the collision and would have been able to fly away to make baby ducklings. Or perhaps not.

I hit a pheasant once at around 120mph. I was too busy concentrating on my braking point for a right hander that was coming up, but a friend who was driving a few feet behind me told me that there was a spectacular shower of feathers when I hit it. Fortunately my car was undamaged.

Overtook a mercedes a few of weeks ago. He was doing 130 at the time, so I accelerated to 160 for the pass.

    Fortunately, there was no pheasants.

Many years ago we were driving through Thetford Forest and a wood pigeon flew out and caught the corner of the front wing tearing it apart, blood, guts and feathers flew up into the air and behind us. Our friends following in an open top were not impressed :D
