To answer your question, we're told that all banks have to have their own unique sortcode prefix. As not all 16xxxx sortcodes are being divested the requirement to do this has been forced rather than chosen..

Not true. The 30 XX XX and 77 XX XX codes are shared between Lloyds and TSB, which are separate banks, so they can share sort code prefixes if they want to.
  • Not sure what hassle it's going to cause as when I switched banks the only organisation I had to inform myself was my employer, the bank handled the rest and that was before the switch guarantee.

I would assume that a redirect would be put in place for twelve months to give you plenty of time to do this.

Unless you are running a bussiness account that your customers pay into via standing order or manual BACS transfer when you invoice them but again you should have 12 months to update your stationary or inform them in another way.

TSB already had it's own range - 87 XX XX
It just didn't move the hangers-on with 77 or 30 sort codes.

    87 was/is TSB Scotland.

TSB customers prior to the merge was 77, Lloyds was 30. Post split both banks down south use 30 and 77, there's no way of telling which is which.

  • It is hassle for some people.

When I switched bank, both my gas and electricity company sent me a letter telling me that they had received the new account details, but I had to ring to confirm.

Some bills failed to process as the company was still trying to use an old DD.

IF the system works well, true its not much hassle, but it won't work well for everyone.

what are the differences between RBS Scotland and W&G?

I can't tell since transferring to a Scottish branch.
  • There is no difference.

As the transfer has not yet taken place, the only difference relates to what accounts are avalible, and the log in system used. Non-sottish customers cannot open certain accounts. Think that is it.

    TSB Bank plc was called:
    • LLOYDS TSB SCOTLAND PLC 28 Jun 1999 - 09 Sep 2013
    • TSB BANK SCOTLAND PLC 01 Nov 1989 - 28 Jun 1999
    • TSB SCOTLAND PUBLIC LIMITED COMPANY 17 Jul 1986 - 01 Nov 1989
    • TRUSTEE SAVINGS BANK PUBLIC LIMITED COMPANY 27 Nov 1985 - 17 Jul 1986
Accounts / branches with 77-XX-XX and 30-XX-XX were transferred from what is currently know as Lloyds Bank plc.

Therefore TSB does indeed have its own sort code...

  • The reason RBS is W&G are having to get separate sort codes is probably due to the banks completely separating as in both a brand and on the systems they operate. This is why it's costing RBS/the government so much to do the split as they are in effect having to create a whole new bank from scratch not like what they did with Lloyds and TSB.

TSB is be probably got away with using the same sort codes as they are still renting the Lloyds system and sharing a lot of there features meaning overall little has changed. However it will be interesting when they merge with the Sabadell as i imagine sort codes may change then.

My understanding is that behind the scenes the Lloyds/TSB separation has been relatively minor. Same computer systems in use?

W&G will be absolutely and completely separate from top to bottom.

TSB was always marked to have separate systems down the line, this was well documented, Lloyds set aside 800 million if I remember right. This is no longer needed since the buyout.

TSB is absolutely and completely separate from Lloyds bank. Sure they might use the same system.

Metro Bank uses Barclays for some services? is it a separate bank to Barclays?

RBS are going to copy their software, move it to a separate system, and stick a different logo on it if I understand it right.
