Williams & Glyn (RBS England and wales) customers to get new sort codes

Why?

What a lot of hassle that is going to cause.

how have you learnt that this is happening Paul?

assuming you are right, they must be creating a new set of sort codes which are distinctly W&G.

imv there is no way the EU should have been allowed to force the break up of Lloyds and RBS at all:doh:

The new sort codes will be 17 XX XX for W&G.

The change will happen during the second part of 2016.

According to Wikipedia 15-**-** and 17-**-** are already assigned to W&G. Looking back through page edits, those sort codes have been allocated to them for a long time.

I'm guessing that sort codes are hard coded in to the banking system. N&P recently changed the clearing bank they use and issued customers with a new sort code.

Sometime ago there was a proposal that account numbers (including sort code) should be made portable so that customers could take them from bank to bank. However this was considered too difficult and costly to implement.

There's a similar situation with telephone numbers. Customers can't easily take their 020 London number to Liverpool (0151) with them.

Can't believe this. My RBS account (16 xx xx) was originally a W&G account and the sort code transferred from W&G to RBS.

I think this would be the last straw, I transferred to NatWest when RBS was going to sell branches to Santander, so my RBS account is only used occasionally. One DD to keep it active and a spare contactless debit card for when I am on London Transport with someone where I want to pay their transport costs.

    Why?

It's likely to be a transparent process, similar to switching bank accounts.

The EU was quite right to do so, you can't expect to use state aid to circumvent competition law and carry on all hunky dory.

  • Why is it necessary?, Lloyds TSB did not create new sort codes when carving out TSB.

    Dunno.

The Lloyds and TSB merger was relatively recent. Perhaps it's technically more difficult to split the RSB sort codes.

    Does it really matter?

You mentioned this is going to cause you a lot of hassle. What hassle is that?

A number of corporate customers are not moving to W&G, they are remaining as RBS. Presumably RBS want to keep the sort codes for these customers.
