wheelie bin dilemma

AAARRGGHH!!
yesterday i put my wheelie bin out along with two very light black bags (which i placed on top to keep cats off), they didnt empty the bin!!!!!!!!! or take the sacks. Presumably because the bags were on top and they wouldnt touch them!!!
I went onto council website to email them, and on the refuse collectionb page it clearly says we will collect any amount of black bags. having gone bk to the site now and read it thoroughly, this is clearly OLD information. If u go to the recycling page it explains more re the fact that those with wheelie bins will have no collcection of black bags only stuff placed in the wheelie bins!!
I am finding this wheelie bin malarky a pain in the butt!!!!!
I can only presume that the binmen didnt empty the bin cos the bags were oin top of it, which is rediculous!! the bin is full (hence the bags) and now its 2 weeks before it will be emptied. I do not have the time to que at the tip to take this stuff only to be accused of having trade waste!!!!!! (err NO your stupid binmen didnt collect)!!!!!!(actually prob not the binmens fault, they prob told not to)!!!
The food wheelie bin is full of maggots, and last time that was emptied the binmen chose to leave the lid open, so now its full of maggots at the bottom, disgusting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A cat also had to be rescued from the bin, as they left the lid open and the cat jumped onto it and fell in!!!
There was a time when we could leave anything out and the binmen would take it, they always got handsomly rewarded at xmas with beer and money!!!! Me thinks lots of binmen will perhaps miss out on their xmas goodies with this new system!!!
Ive emailed the council to say the bin will remain out in the street until its emptied AND that they need to update their website!!! NO reply!!!
No wonder so much fly tipping is going on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
anyone else had same probs!!!!!
I thought i read somewhere that the government had told councils to bring back weekly collection of perishables???? We have had to move our bin to bottom of garden cos of flies!!

The bain of my life this fortnightly collection thing or 'binovation' as our council like to call it! - Less of an innovation and more of a cost cutting exercise if you ask me!
My council do say that if they miss your bin (through their fault, not yours), give them a call and they will do it within 24 hours
IIRC they are capable of taking extra bags over xmas when they have extra days off so miss collections...0 -
First of all, calm down!Ive emailed the council to say the bin will remain out in the street until its emptied AND that they need to update their website!!! NO reply!!!
You said this only happened yesterday. Give them a chance!I do not have the time to que at the tip to take this stuff only to be accused of having trade waste!!!!!!
How do you know that this will happen? How do you know there will even be a queue?!
Why not ring the council, and calmly explain that you did not realise that you could no longer put black bin bags out, and hence your situation. If they are unable to help, then take the bags to the tip.
Edit: Please don't think I support the fortnightly collections - two weeks of cat poo just ain't nice! xGone ... or have I?0 -

Blimey, OP. Calm down! When I lived in a house 2 years ago (I live in an apartment now, and the rubbish is collected from industrial bins in the basement, weekly - but then again, my service charge is probably double your council tax, so fair enough) it was the same. If you don't want anything getting into the bin, why not place two bricks on them - you're not supposed to place rubbish on them, and for whatever reason, you did. So the blame is with you whether you like it or not.
I regularly had maggots in the bin. The solution? Clean your bin!! When it *does* get emptied, swill it out with bleach and water (there are companies that do this too) and tip it down the drain. Make sure you bag waste meat seperately where you can (ie, raw chicken, chicken carcass, bones etc). If flies can't get to it, no maggots will grow!
TBH you sound like you are getting really irate when all the council bin workers have done is their job. They won't take extra bin bags not only because it's not within their regulations but also because there might be syringes, fecal matter etc etc on the bags. Why should someone have to touch that- they have to be vigilant. You're expecting them to empty your maggoty, filthy bin and they don't even get a smile or a thanks at Christmas any more!!
If you were a bit more sensible about your waste not only would you be helping the environment, you'd have nothing to moan about. Sorry OP, but it irks me people can get so ratty about it, when everyone else seems to manage fine.0 -

The best thing to do when the council misses a collection is to ring them on the telephone. Councils are allowed to take longer to reply to emails and letters, and being bank holiday most staff would have left as early as they could get away with as it's human nature.
If you ring them about a missed collection and do it before the afternoon, they will often come out first thing the next morning.
And if the binmen persistently leave the lids of bins causing pets to go in them then:
1. Email the council
2. And if they don't reply email a local councillor to take it up with them council (http://www.writetothem.com/ just put in your postcode)
The binmen started moving my wheelie bin around I complained my wheelie bin is now in the same place every week cos they don't want me complaining again.I'm not cynical I'm realistic

I left our bins out last week to be collected and low and behold they were still there unemptied the next morning. I called the council and explained that my bins were still full and she told me the binmen had marked them down as not out. I assured her they were out as i took my neighbours out as well as they were on holiday and his got emptied. They were both sat on our drives in clear view. She told me there was nothing they could do as the binmen had marked my bin down as not out if she arranged for them to be reemptied the council would get charged and they were not prepared to incur a charge!
Bearing in mind it had 2 weeks worth of rubbish in! So i had to make a trip to the tip with it all as otherwise it would be sat there for a further 2 weeks!
As for the maggots, every week when (if!!) they are emptied i fill them up with some water and bleach, swill it round and pur away. I also put in dustbin powder. Its cheap enough from asda or wilkies and makes the bin smell fresh!
Also i double bag my rubbish so the flies have trouble getting in.0 -
In our local area in East of Scotland the Council quite clearly states that all refuse must be in the wheelie bin with the lid closed. I know the collection guys make an odd exception when the lid is slightly popping up. If I take extra refuse to our Household Waste centre there is never a question about it being trade waste. The guys are very helpful about helping to get stuff out the boot or redirecting to correct skip for each type of refuse. We also have an extremely good Special Uplift service here. For the cost of a premium call (guaranteed not more than £1.80) the Council will uplift large quantities of household goods, refuse etc. You just need to estimate at the time of the phone call. They also do special uplifts for excess garden rubbish at no extra charge. I have recently used this service twice and it is great. The maximum uplift is about 10 rubble bags and so long as everything is at pavement they come on a Saturday, pop the stuff in the wagon and leave the rubble bags for the next time of using!
Our bin guys never leave the lids open and I do have my bin cleaned and the bag changed once a fortnight (£2.50) as I don't really have time to do it myself. Money well spent in my view.

If you pour boiling water onto the maggots in the bin it kills them instantly, but they do hiss a bit.0

Our local council are starting doing alternative week collections in the next few weeks. Had a big debate with MIL about all this, her argument was that we shouldn't have to do the bin mans job (by recycling??) Acording to her we shouldn't be forced to recycle.
Well to council gave everyone blue bins and a bag to put in some recylable items and obviously weren't getting great results. People such as my MIL feeling that swilling a few jars and cans out is beond her.
Me and my partner have been recyling since we moved in together. We often find that we do only use half a bin and often we forget to put it out. I dont find that the bin smells even with lots of cat litter from three cats.
I think next on the list is a compost bin and maybe ordering another bin for all the empty tins of cat food lol0
