Returning a bike to Argos

Apologies if this is in the wrong place but I wasn't sure where to put it,
I recently bought a bike from Argos on Friday 13th November for £130 (reduced from £260). I got it back home and ready to assemble. Removed all the packaging that comes on bikes (cable ties, bubble wrap etc) and assembled the bike.
Because of the excellent Scottish weather in November I was unable to ride it until today. That's where the problems began!
Firstly the quality of the bike is horrendous, the handlebars are tightened as tight as they will go and still wobble, the front disc brake rubs, squeaks and doesn't work. The rear brake is useless (and yes I have assembled it correctly) and also half of the gears don't work!
So my question is can I return it???
I have the box, and receipt, but none of the packaging like cardboard bits and cut cable ties. Seeing as iv only had it for 3 days and used test rode it once I presume I can but want to be sure before I drive all the way there and get told no!
Any help is greatly appreciated.

  • Anybody know anything or have any idea??
  • They may do something for you here if you take it in with all that you have including the receipt, I would say that buying a bike at £130- would hardly be of good quality anyway so maybe up your spend if you want another one.

I did buy a bike ages ago and have used it like 3 times from Tesco's it only cost me around £100- or so and was rubbish to be honest, Still in my garage gathering dust now.
  • Well yeh I understand that but like i say it was on offer from £260 which is why I went with that specific bike. If id of paid £260 for it id be absolutely raging!
  • All you can do then is take it back and see they may try to adjust the fittings to make it more secure though.
  • Ok, I was mainly wondering if anyone knew my actual rights in this position because there not bike mechanics and as far as I'm concerned it's loose and faulty and not safe to ride

It should be fit for purpose and if not then a refund can be sort, My point above is that they may wish to try and fix the bike so it is of a suitable and safe standard to ride in which case no refund offered.
  • If half the gears don't work you have not set it up properly. Unfortunately cheap bikes are fitted with cheap nasty components which can be very difficult to set up.
  • If you take it back, including what packaging you have, and explain politely your issues/problems with the bike then, yes they will refund you.

If you go demanding your rights ..........
  • The gears were already pre setup so I haven't even touched them. And I don't want to to be honest. The whole idea of buying a bike was it was ready to ride and I don't have to mess about with is.

But yes I was in no way intending to be rude when returning it, I'll just speak to the manager explain the situation and see what he says then. If he offers to send it off and get it fixed then that's perfect, although a little inconvenient.

    Cheers all

The retailer can replace, repair or refund, at their discretion. You've no automatic right to a refund or replacement.
