She wants her kids PC to become usable again (it currently has so much rubbish that it's very slow)
I want to help her, but don't really want to involve opening up the case or spending any of her money!0 -
If they intend to move to Windows 10, perhaps run a clean install of Windows 7 Pro or upwards using the recovery disc that you utilised for your other installs. 64 bit perhaps. Once you are offered the upgrade, hopefully to Windows 10 Pro, allow the upgrade. Once complete, you can obtain the Windows 10 Pro media in order to run a clean install.
You should be able achieve the same thing by running a Factory Restore using the hard drive image. If you do it that way, refer to me for the upgrade to Pro and then allow the upgrade to Windows 10 Pro. Once again, you can run a clean install of Windows 10 afterwards.0 -
Update -
Tries several times to go down the Toshiba Factory Restore route to no avail.
Tried powering on with 0 or F1 of F10 pressed but it wouldn't work.
Found a W7 SP1 Media Refresh (32 bit) disk in the drawer, so, bunged that in and it installed in no time.
However, the wi-fi won't work, I had to plug in the LAN cable.
Have looked in Device Manager and tried to update driver of the network adapter, but no progress.
Trying Win Update but nothing much happening
Tried to d/l Office from wth MS site but it wouldn't accept the product code I had.
She had Office 2007 Professional Plus, which isn't d/l from tha MS site - trying to d/l it from brothersoft, but it says '2 hours'!!
Think I will just leave it alone all night and see what morning brings.

If they need a longer lasting battery; Toshiba Primary High Capacity 12-Cell Li Ion Laptop Battery PA3727U-1BRS £9.99 They should get five to six hours out of it. Chunky though.

So, I've started the install of Office Professional Plus 2007 (which I d/l last night)
First thing is to enter the product key, which I got from Belarc Advisor (and checked with Jellybean), but it says 'invalid key'!
I printed out from Belarc, so no possibility of error in copying.
Any further thoughts?0 -

Not sure - anyway, MS Office all sorted now thanks to a very helpful forumite's message - no prizes for guessing who!
Next problem, I'm stuck with Win Updates - it keeps saying 'restart to compete update installation', but following several tries (including switch off and remove battery) it still says the same.
Last update was KB2511455

Did you run a clean install from Boot, formatting the drive?

I will restart perfectly, but then when I go to Win Update in Control Panel, it won't check for new updates as it says I need to restart ... but restarting doesn't fix it!
I have tried removing the last update KB2511455, but that didn't help
Downloading the System Update Readiness Tool, but it says 30 minutes!
Will report back ...0
