I have been asked to rejuvenate a laptop for my niece's kids (8&12?)

Toshiba Satellite L500-19X

Belarc says it's PSLS0E-00F01DEN

Win7 Home Premium, 32 bit
4 GB RAM

Shall I do a 'factory restore' - if so how?
Or a format/reinstall

:)

Use the opportunity for a free upgrade to Windows 10. Then the kids won't get bullied at school for having an antique laptop ;)
  • You could try, select "Restart" while holding down the shift key and then look at the options on the screen.
Or shut down and then hold down the zero key wile pushing the power button.

But back up any data first, as it will be lost in the restore process. You'll also need to reinstall any post-market software, so gather the licence numbers.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

The L500 doesn't appear to be in the W10 list

But you could always try the latest W10 (see sig); clean install now works provided you have a visible W7 sticker.

    Or... W7 restore... http://forums.toshiba.com/t5/System-Recovery-and-Recovery/How-to-restore-your-Toshiba-laptop-PC-to-its-factory-fresh/td-p/269815
If you put your general location in your Profile, somebody here may be able to come and help you.

    No data
Belarc advisor AND Magic Jelly Bean have confirmed these numbers :)

Hmm, there is a W7 sticker, but the 'product key' from Belarc and Jellybean is not the one on the sticker :o:cool:
It does have the W10 flag in the notification area

in the W10 flag there is a system readiness checker, if you run it it will tell you if the lappy will take w10 or not......

...personally I'd stick with 7

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple :D

The hard drive factory restore should install 64 bit. Perhaps they used the DVD at some point to restore, as that installs 32 bit.
Problem is that both reinstall the Toshiba Bloatware. Though you can remove that manually.
You can also install an inexpensive SSD and run a clean install.

Hmm, do you think that's why Belarc & Jellybean find a different product key to the one on the base of the machine?

    Do you have a preference?
    I think I still have both 32 & 64 somewhere, maybe you gave me a link? ;)

No. that isn't the reason.. You don't need a key for any of the methods described above, including the recovery disc to which you allude.

It depends on what they want and what you feel like doing. A clean install on a SSD will bring the best performance.
