Was looking at these myself. Pity they don't do single sockets as i have loads of these I would convert.

Just don't get the ones from asda. We have some BG ones I bought from a local electrical company that fit into normal boxes.

I can't easily switch to deeper boxes, because the walls are brick.

I think spacers are going to be the way to go.
Or you could buy a trusted brand that will both fit and not burn your house down while you sleep.

Technology changes with time. These sockets did not exist five years ago and I foresee that in perhaps 5-10 years time they will be deemed old fashioned, or becoming obsolete. I have not fitted them in my home for this reason, and to keep matters simple with aesthetics and wiring.

But everyone is entitled to their viewpoint. I may be barking up the wrong tree!

I saw these in Wickes recently. I asked the staff if they drew power when not being used, or if the off switch also switched off the USB part. They couldn't tell me so I didn't buy them.

Why would you expect someone who works in retail to have electrical knowledge ??

I work in a similar place and people regularly ask questions that should be directed at a qualified tradesman, I can answer any questions where the information is one the product information but no more.

  • Generally these do draw power, albeit a small amount. http://www.greenbuildingforum.co.uk/newforum/comments.php?DiscussionID=12988

Isn't the concern more that there will be electronics permanently connected, rather than the amount of power being drawn? I'd rather not leave lots of electronic products powered-up when I am on holiday.

That's my main concern, and not just that it's using electricity all the time, albeit a very small amount if the design is good BUT just how well designed and safe are these power supplies I wonder, most, if not all are probably fairly cheaply made, I guess / hope they'd trip the consumer unit if they failed........

As for that ThingCharger, it looks good but I would not want my phone/tablet being supported just by the micro charger plug, it looks like that's all that holds the device up while it charges, a recipe for snapped sockets I suspect.
