Worcestershire, 10 miles outside of Birmingham (can someone more technologically savvy than me explain why the server is <50 miles from London?)

Every week for the last five years I have typed "When is broadband coming to my Area" into google. My heart sank when Cameron announced we would all be connected by 2020, as in 2010 the Government said we would all be connected by 2015.

    I can't wait to use Skype/Facetime/Netflix.

I used to enjoy playing online poker 12 years ago in university, but if I try to now I timeout every other hand.

Depending on his ISP he may be connected to the rest of the internet near the server it's auto selecting. Your physical location doesn't necessarily correlate to where your ISP connects to the rest of the internet and thus the best place for a speed test (you want the speed test to be done as close to where your ISP connects you to the net, as opposed to closest to your house).

For example I'm nearer Milton Keynes than London, but my ISP is currently routing all it's traffic from my area through a London link from memory (as that's it's nearest major connection to the wider internet), so if I choose an MK based test server the data has to travel further and through more links, than if I select a London one which might be in the same building as my ISP's first external link.

I'm probably putting it badly, but basically your location doesn't reflect the closest route to a server as the data isn't going directly from you to them (I've seen data going to EU servers passing through NY from the UK as an extreme example - iirc at the time one of the big MMORPG's was having real issues with routing it's UK customers correctly).

Also, the speedtest site says it auto selects a server based on ping, but if I let it auto select it always picks one near me geographically, but I get better speeds (& pings) from other servers.

Personally, despite being 300 miles away, I always pick Maidenhead (Xilo hosted) for best results, and I've done so not just with my current ISP (BT) but also with my previous ISP with similar results.

Curious to what average sdpeeds folk around the UK are getting, on 'normal' broadband connections- not fibre, for the moment!

    Why and for what purpose?

Its entirely dependent on the length and quality of your line so will differ for almost everyone. Mum used to potentially get 5-6mbps (actually 0.3 - 1.5mbps with Post Office) but I switched her to FTTC and she gets 38mbps down now.

This is mine: ADSL line. Sky LLU. Exchange is only a couple of streets away hence the decent speed.

Our cables now deliver speeds up to 200Mbps. Eye watering.

Yes, yes you're faster than most of the UK population who can't receive the service, we get it.
