Curious to what average sdpeeds folk around the UK are getting, on 'normal' broadband connections- not fibre, for the moment!

Well I'm with Virgin and it's coax cable not fibre.




I'm on a 50mbps service so not bad for a Sunday in Epsom, Surrey when the world and his wife is watching cable TV.

Virgin Fibre, meant to be a 20mbps service and it normally is closer to that when I do a test

getting a free upgrade to 50mbps in the New Year

Believe it or not this is good. Switched from the PO few months back where 0.5 - 1.0 was normal.

FTTC is fibre to the cabinet then the last run to the home is through the telephone line whilst cable is fibre direct to home.

VM is still fibre broadband, not coax cable broadband. So useless for OPs research.

Also from rural somerset - not really "fibre" as the fibre only goes as far as the street cabinet with just standard copper pair actually feeding my broadband - looking forward to getting a true fibre connection some day.

Instead of calling someone clueless perhaps you can correct me then, clearly virgin is fibre and so irrelevant to this topic. Perhaps the last part of my sentence about how cable works is incorrect however.

Fibre is fibre-optic cable, now frequently used to provide a signal to the local node or even local street cabinet.

Fibre-optic to the home, known as FTTH (home) or FTTP (property) is still in it's infancy, available to a very few at the moment and is very expensive.

The typical Virgin installation is Coax Cable to the property. It is not fibre-optic.


As to being 'arrogant' I simply don't like being called out by someone who clearly doesn't know what they are talking about.
