Holiday cancelled

Hi

Firstly I don't want this to come accross the wrong way, I'm shocked at the situation in Paris and my heart goes out to the people affected, but right now I'm sat in a Disneyland Paris hotel (arrived today) and the park is obviously closed, we were advised this morning the park would open tomorrow but just found out its going to be closed until Wednesday, we're due to go home on Monday.

With the late notice we're unable to go home today but there is no point staying so we're planning on checking out in the morning, only shops are open I think.

We have the free travel insurance with nationwide and wondered where do we stand with claiming back our money, it's cost me just shy of £900 to be here and will be booking to come back in a few weeks.

How do you tell an excited 6 year olds we now cant go, gutted for them

Thanks

What does the policy cover with regards cancellations, that's really what you should be looking at or call the insurers and ask.

Look under the 'curtailment' section of the policy, which is what it is, not cancellation. And you also need to check whether you're covered if the loss is due to terrorism, not all policies will cover this. I'm sure their 24hr helpline will be able to tell you if you have a valid claim

Have you asked DLP whether they will be offering replacement park tickets as a goodwill gesture?

I think you'll only be covered for your euro Disney tickets. Doubt they will cover you for anything else. It's a tragic event but your travel and hotel has been unaffected and all that has happened is that an amusement park is shut. Technically you've received the travel and hotel you've paid for with no issue.

I would compare it with is you got tickets to a gig somewhere and it was cancelled last minute. Although you would get a refund of your ticket you wouldn't get travel and hotels back.

I can't believe you won't get your passes replaced for a later date. I was in a similar(ish) situation when the park in Anaheim was hit by an earthquake.

The rides were only down for an hour or so whilst they did safety tests before starting the rides up again - and we got passes to come back again another day (even though we'd still had the rest of the day and evening in the Parks with all rides operating ).

I'm not comparing an earthquake with the events in Paris but simply saying that both events were beyond Disney's control so I'd expect them to make good on the passes in your situation too.

I hope so, we only stayed last night as we were told the park was opening today, I understand that's out of their control but shouldn't have made that statement if they wernt 100%.

Had we known it would be close until Wednesday we'd have turned round and gone home before checking in

    I'll check the policy, thanks
  • Terrorism may also be considered as Force Majeure (aka Act of God) by insurers, so it may be under that section if it doesn't have its own, separate, one.

Travel Policies don't tend to have a section for Force Majeure / Act of God.
  • Section 14 of the policy covers general exclusions, and any loss through the consequences of acts of terrorism is listed there, so there is nothing you can claim for I'm afraid.

At the time they made that statement they probably did intend to open; it may be that they were later advised to close.

I think the one I had for my New Zealand trip did.

However, that was a more specialised one as I was going out there for a year.
