Thoughts for those that lost their lives in Paris

Many are surprised how few police shooting there are, however sad the majority of the cases are and however incompetently the senior police deal with the aftermath.
We are indeed very lucky to live in a society which has had such strict gun control and having (mostly) unarmed police.
Paris, I think, happened partly for reasons that are similar to the problems they are having in the US. Apparently, Europe is awash with weapons from the Balcan wars. In theory, however, this inflow of weapons is a one off event and some how they maybe can get them off the streets??0 -
How much more do you think our security forces will struggle to cope when the huge reductions in the police budget are announced in the spending review.....or do you think Osborne will change his mind now due to recent events? Fact is our security services are being cut to the bone by this govmt....so their posturing over defending British people against terrorists etc is avery recent thing.....I wonder why:rotfl:
That is so such a sad post. So desperate (to score a political point).
You know every time we can't afford something that we really need as a country - it just reminds us how much money Labour wasted whilst it was in office. And I'm glad you find this all so funny.
Instead of Gordon Brown buying votes with Tax Credits why didn't he save some for a rainy day?0 -
Tony Blair recently apologised by accepting he could bear some responsibility for the rise in killing sprees such as that we have witnessed in Paris.
I believe he should be made to answer, please sign and circulate the petition to parliament. Thank you..._

I seem to recall that it was Parliament's decision to go into Iraq. Do you want them all to apologize?
In the end, Parliament did what it thought was right. We'll never know what would have happened if we hadn't have over thrown Hussein - but I don't think you can assume that it would necessarily have been better.
We are where we are. Get over it.
Looks like the UN will get an agreement. I'm assuming there will be a free vote in the HoC.
Anyone, care to guess which way Corbyn will vote?0 -
The UN Resolution
http://www.focus-fen.net/news/2015/11/20/390015/un-poised-to-approve-all-necessary-measures-against-isil-in-syria-the-telegraph.htmlFrench officials said they were formally submitting a draft resolution to the Security Council, pushing aside a competing draft offered by Russia earlier this week. It could be adopted as early as Friday or over the weekend.
The French manoeuvre reflected confidence that its resolution would not provoke Russian or Chinese vetoes and would thus win approval.
The text, shared with the The Independent, calls on member states “with the capacity to do so” to “take all necessary measures, in compliance with international law, in particular international human rights, refugee and humanitarian law, on the territory under the control of Isil [Isis] in Syria and Iraq, to redouble and co-ordinate their efforts to prevent and suppress terrorist acts committed specifically by Isil… and to eradicate the safe haven they have established in Iraq and Syria”.
The resolution “is short, strong, and focused on one primary goal: the fight against the common enemy, Daesh [Isis]”, said France’s ambassador to the UN, François Delattre. “We intend to work with all our Security Council partners to achieve a swift adoption of this project, around which we hope the international community will come together.”
So agreement expected today or over the weekend.0 -

This is indeed good news if the resolution is acted on swiftly. I trust Russia will be involved. However, what happens when the murderers and their attachments all start leaving the places they have occupied? Won't they just end up in soft, defenceless Europe, given Merkel and Juncker's stance on the migrant invasion, thereby causing more massive security problems for Europe (as if these aren't bad enough already)?
I also think they should be dealing with Assad, who is the only one who has a coherent structure in place in Syria, and who can contain the hundred or more conflicting groups in the country (who have to be dealt with if there is ever to be peace in that region). Most of the Near Eastern countries have needed a strong hand throughout the millennia due to the tribal aspect of the societies – a fundamental truth the West simply doesn't understand. Democracy won't work in these countries even though it may be temporary imposed on them. After all, Christians and other faiths were not persecuted in Syria before the revolution, and Assad might be the best out of a bad job.0 -

In other newsRussian military forces have used long range bombers and cruise missiles, reportedly destroying at least 15 oil refineries controlled by ISIS, in an effort to disrupt the finances of the organization.0

And of course even without an agreement at the UN there is a very good argument to be made that as the UK is part of the EU and NATO, an attack on France is the same thing as an attack on the UK so self-defence can simply be invoked.
The Torygraph seems to be of the opinion that 60 Labour MPs are prepared to defy the whip and vote for action in Syria. That would put the cat among the pigeons.0
