1: Op you do not need compensation. It is ultimately your responsibility to make sure you have valid up to date insurance.
2: You got off so think yourself lucky

If the OP made a complaint to the Ombudsman would expect the Insurer to put the OP back into the same position financially as they were before the Insurer made the mistake.

If they have paid out more due to having to reinsure the vehicle then the extra premium would need to be refunded by the Insurer along with any other expenses such as alternative transport etc.

The Ombudsman would almost certainly offer compensation in addition for the inconvenience caused.

So I trust before you set off in your car each day you check the MID to ensure your insurer hasn't made a technical error and cancelled your policy instead of somebody elses??

The OP didn't get stopped the day after their insurance ceased. They were stopped four months after.

The insurance wasn't cancelled mid-term. It failed to auto-renew - yet the OP didn't notice that they hadn't paid their £500 premium.

@OP you really need to edit your post to reflect that you eventually cancelled the policy you took out whilst stopped by the police and purchased a new policy at a not so inflated price.

Unfortunately it's leading people to believe you're out of pocket by £1400, which is why they're saying you should be eligible for much more compensation, when clearly that's not the case.

Assuming your renewal price was an expected figure - not affected because of this mishap, and the police had dropped all charges. You're now in the same financial position as you were before hand.

What compensation are you expecting from the insurance company?

Take the £75 and chalk it up to a lesson learned - after all you need to check that you are insured, not just assume a policy is auto-renewed.

She has managed to get 4 months free insurance plus £75 compensation for the minor inconvenience of being pulled over. Considering that it was partially her fault that she didn't notice the premium wasn't paid she should be happy she has benefited from the situation!

Did they back date the policy?

    Isn't that illegal?

The offer seems a far one to me unless the OP can prove it cost her more in loss of time/money, after all if she's no longer insd with the same insurer they are not going to go OTT offering compo. Although why did the premium jump so much at renewal, is there more to this tell than the OP's told us?

Both are responsible. The OP should have realised they weren't insured because no payments were being taken for a minimum of 4 months since renewal.
I paid the policy up front, not in monthly instalments
