connecting to gas

Hi, I've just bought a small property that I'm hoping to turn into a clinic for a few years then convert to a flat. I'd like to connect to gas for central heating. At the moment only electricity is connected but a gas line runs very close to the property and most of the other buildings along the street are connected to gas. I've had a domestic connection quote for about £300 and a gas plumber tells me that I will only ever need a domestic sized supply for such a small property. The quote for connecting to gas as a commercial property on the other hand is £500 compulsory call out survey fee then about £5000 for connection! Is there a problem with having a domestic connection even though the property will be used for a short time commercially? I could pay the gas supplier a commercial supply rate after connection. Thanks

you might try posting in the main energy forum (above this one)
http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/forumdisplay.php?f=13
which is where mains gas is discussed, more people read that forum, this forum is LPG, heating oil etc.0 -
If the property is currently residential, have it connected as such. If you subsequently change use, you are not presumably going to change the heating system?
£300 for mains gas connection is an absolute bargain. No free lunch, and no free laptop0
