Thats just it - low hanging fruit. I wonder what % just paid up last time.
I reckon they know this time that by sending out 10000 letters, say, they will get so much back out people who pay with no arguments.
So why bother pursuing - its easier to just send out another 10000 letters.
Also, why go to court. If they risk taking one person to court, then the whole thing falls to pieces. Chasing one person and they potentially cut off the cash cow that is the low hanging fruit.0 -
As people have mentioned, it's very difficult to prove an IP address is associated with a person. For example, you may have had to disable your wifi password to fix some network issues and forgot to activate it again...... this means anyone in the street could have connected to your router and downloaded material.0

paulfoel,it's easy to spoof an IP address
I'm not making a statement about the veracity of rest of the matter, but saying "it's easy to spoof an IP address" on a public network is simply incorrect. The views expressed here are my own. I'm not sure if the ip address rules are similar with car registration numbers where a car reg will only ever link to the registered keeper of a car and will NOT reveal with any certainty the name of the driver. Some things like speeding tickets mean the registered keeper must legally name the driver but I'm not sure if the owner of a wifi network is legally obliged to keep logs of which IP addresses have been associated with specific users. Even if this were the case what about shared devices that have more than one user - tracking down a user would be quite difficult and beyond the means of anyone not totally IT savvy.0

boliston,
RIPE adrminister IP addresses - like the DVLA - I guess.
It is not possible to spoof address as IP routing tables stop this from happening. The views expressed here are my own. I am not a Solicitor nor am I affiliated with any of the parties I mention. paulfoel,
It is not possible to spoof a public IP address. If GE say the traffic came from that IP address and they have technical evidence to back that up AND the ISP confirms the address was allocated to you, then it's difficult to argue to the contrary.

And really, how accurate do you think the ISPs DHCP logs are?0 -
What film did you download to get this letter?0
