I would consider Worsley, Boothstown, Astley - all just off J12 of the M60. Oldham is about half an hour away via the M60. New build prices are around between £220k and £500k depending where you are looking. You can also get to Liverpool in half an hour and towards Lancashire into the countryside in about half an hour as well.
Half an hour at 3am with no traffic! At rush hour more like an hour and a half or more.0 -
Prestwich is tons better than over rated south Manc! and (Oldham Ewwww) it has the M-way on its doorstep along with more country side than anywhere else
Check out Prestwich people on FB
also Whitefield and Unsworth depending on Budget
Oldham can be done in 20 minutes from Prestwich and Whitefield
PM me if you want to know more as I live in one of the above areas
Haha, Anyone would think you live Prestwich. It's nothing special. It the better part of North Manchester but that doesn't necessarily mean much when you next to places like Pendlebury.
More countryside than anywhere else? You don't get out much outside the M60 by the sounds of it.0 -
Don't do it.0

No I don’t live in Prestwich but it is up and coming with plenty of bars and restaurants and very good transport links including the met.
As for being next to Pendlebury it is a good 15 minutes’ drive but then so is Manc town centre, Bury, Bolton and Rochdale.
Countryside Hmm let’s see Philips park, Irwell sculpture trail, cliffton country park, Heaton park one of biggest municipal parks and Holcombe hill and Riverton / winter hill and the West Pennine moors and then all the canals to walk / ride round all within 5 - 20 minutes away.
Just sayinSpending my time reading how to fix PC's,instead of looking at Facebook.0 -
If it involves using the m60 or m62 to get there, it's out of the question if it is a must he arrives for work.
You can quite easily spend all day sitting on that motorway waiting to be turned around.I do Contracts, all day every day.1 -

Yes, Prestwich has some nice parks, although not all the ones you mentioned are actually there... Its greener than most parts of Manchester. The fact that its near the countryside that surrounds Greater Manchester is no different to anywhere else within the M60 though!0 -
If I was forced to go back to living in the Oldham area nowadays, the only area I would consider would be Delph/Uppermill.
If you're only wanting to be working in Oldham, then go for the Stockport area (Romiley/Woodley/Marple/High Lane) which have good non-motorway road connections with Oldham via Ashton."There are not enough superlatives in the English language to describe a 'Princess Coronation' locomotive in full cry. We shall never see their like again". O S Nock0 -
I'd rather be north/east of Manchester as I prefer the hillier countryside & on the whole I think house prices tend to be lower than in the south/west. Obviously the nicer areas tend to be more expensive, and even within a specific area you could see a great variation.
I would never entertain living in Oldham itself, though some of the outlying areas are OK. Rochdale may be worth a look too.
Bolton & Bury are just as commutable as Stockport and have some lovely areas on the outskirts with decent housing. Both have excellent facilities & shopping. Bury is on the tram line so an easy journey into Manchester centre with all that it has to offer.
As for the Stockport area, No way would I recommend travelling to Oldham via Ashton in the rush hour! I think I'd rather sit in a motorway jam than battle miles of stop-start traffic controlled by traffic lights that seem to have been programmed by idiots in a time warp.
The sad fact is, as mentioned earlier, the entire Manchester road network becomes clogged at rush hour. At its best, when its not so busy, the M60 is great.
Interesting that no-one has mentioned politics! Might also be worth checking the political affiliation of the Local Authority & MP of any areas you might be considering, if that matters to you.0 -
OP hasn't told us price range vs. size of house wanted.
OP also hasn't made it clear whether easy travel to London is by road or by train. By road, I'd be looking east of Oldham (access to M62/M1), but train I'd be looking at Oldham or west (more into Greater Manchester) for access to Piccadilly. By air, definitely south Manchester!!:heartpuls Mrs Marleyboy :heartpuls

Having lived in both SE Lancs & SW Yorks, I prefer driving south on the M1 rather than the M6. I have started to really hate that part of the journey across the Pennines though0
