The only issue with going towards Huddersfield, is that the roads over the hills can be really treacherous in a bad winter or close at times, making commuting a pain. Some of the roads between Oldham and Yorkshire are real accident blackspots. This can also be an issue in Saddleworth (the last bit of Oldham/Greater Manchester before the borders with Yorkshire/Derbyshire) but not to quite the same extent.
If I was still working in Oldham I'd want to live in Saddleworth, or in one of the nearer Peak District towns/villages around Glossop.0 -
If you don't mind being remote in Winter - Dobcross or Saddleworth; the rail link from Uppermill is over subscribed (packed!) and has a growing ale trail which invites stag and hen parties at weekend times. Personally I would choose Whitefield, Unsworth or Prestwich areas which are no way rural but have access to rural and have great transport links to Manchester via Metrolink.0

Give Glodwick, Shaw and Derker a wide berth.
Saddleworth, Ashton and Glossop has some nice areas.
Also take into account that the tram system now covers Oldham, making it much easier to travel to and from Oldham from surrounding areas as far as Manchester, Rochdale and Bury.:A:dance:1+1+1=1:dance::A

Agree with you on Glossop and Saddleworth, but Ashton over Shaw, really? Shaw has its own moor!0

To be honest, neither Ashton or Shaw.0

M56 is south Warrington, North Warrington is on the M62, which goes directly to Oldham and from the M6 junction you can get to Oldham in 40 minutes, any further west and the traffic is bad. I used to work in the Royton Area and Lived in Warrington. Agree avoid the M60 and M56, Stockport is horrible in rush hour.
I'm sticking to Altrincham being good. Trams into Manchester, going on to Oldham from Manchester. Tatton park and Cheshire country side within 5 minutes drive. Good selection of restaurant, Easy access to the M56, and south Manchester is much nicer than North Manchester.0 -

Best not to.
As others have said there are far better areas to live that aren't too far away. You can pick your friends and you can pick your nose but you can't pick your friend's nose.0 -
Definately look at Ramsbottom, lovely community feel, great selection of local shops. 30 mins to Oldham on a good day but the traffic can get bad on the M60 in a morning so might push it to 45 mins - 1 hr on a bad day but it's worth it for the beautiful scenery.

I live in Glossop and love it, it's far enough from the city to be quite self contained and right on the edge of the Peak District . Can your husband go to work by public transport? If so, the trains are good into Manchester (30mins) and then it's an easy hop to Oldham by tram. If he would prefer to drive, traffic in and out of Glossop is hideous unless you leave very early!0 -
Having worked in Oldham for many years I'd avoid most of it to live in, except Saddleworth - Greenfield, Uppermill, Dobcross, Denshaw.
I also worked in Huddersfield, travelling from Manchester, for 4 years. At least twice a month November - March the motorway was shut/ gridlocked/ down to one lane - usually due to jacknife lorry or snow.
In terms of travelling to work - going Huddersfield towards Oldham/ Manchester in the morning is Horrific, 40 mins will get you no where However going the other way, 40 mins would get you from Oldham to Huddersfield with time to make a brew and have a stretch before work started. It's the reverse in the evenings.
Uppermill/ Greenfield/ Diggle etc, pretty much come to a standstill in snow, and they do get bad snow. But they are lovely villages.
I live in Prestwich, North Manchester, it isn't particularly rural but it has a nice village feel and has had a lot of investment in it. It takes 20 - 30mins to get to Oldham.
We used to live South Manchester (Altrincham/ Didsbury/ Chorlton) and it takes 50 or so minutes to get to Oldham from there.
Ramsbottom is nice. As is Tottington.
Holmfirth/ Marsden/ Slaithwaite (pronounced Slough-it) are nice and in the distance but have the same issues as the Saddleworth places above.
As for transport to London - you'll need to get a train from Manchester Piccadilly most likely, but it's only 2.5hours from there to Euston. Or drive.0
