Oh, and places to avoid in Oldham - Durker, Sholver, Gloddick, Alt, Fitton Hill, Werneth. Obviously all areas have good and bad points but that list does not fit your criteria!
  • I would consider Worsley, Boothstown, Astley - all just off J12 of the M60. Oldham is about half an hour away via the M60. New build prices are around between £220k and £500k depending where you are looking. You can also get to Liverpool in half an hour and towards Lancashire into the countryside in about half an hour as well.

Don't know what your budget is, but your money doesn't buy much in Saddleworth.
If I were you I'd look at the areas of Manchester just south of Oldham - In Chadderton or New Moston you can get a perfectly decent suburban 3 bed semi with gdns front and back for 140k, or a really good one for 160k. 15 mins to centre of Manchester if you go south, 10 mins into Oldham going north.

Marple is nice, can get to Oldham in about 30 minutes by car on average.

Personally wouldnt move east of Oldham, as them Hills are a nightmare in Winter. Traffic coming towards Oldham or Manchester is dreadful in the Morning.

Unless you need to cross the Pennines, don't worry too much about the snow in winter - it really is only a couple of days a year.
Unlike the South the whole place doesn't snarl up for an inch of snow, the roads are kept pretty clear and when it gets really bad they have snowblowers to dig through the drifts.
I went to school in Oldham, we lived in Saddleworth and we always got home whatever the weather! We lived in the house in the middle of this picture; Photo stolen from http://www.variousstuff.co.uk/local/localpics_mix%202014_02.htmnr49_220w.jpg
  • Hi all, again, many thanks again for your posts. So many places to research now, although I am quite liking the sound of Prestwich, not rural but plenty of green space. Please keep posts and opinions coming, this is really helpful..s
  • Um, we moved to Lancashire from Stockport, & were a bit startled to find our sons got some really rough respiratory infections. They adapted but it took about 3 years & several terrifying trips to the hospital & nebuliser.
It is colder & wetter up North - so factor wellie boots, extra shoes and extra layers for everyone. Let the calorie counting & "got to be size zero" ideals slide - a few extra pounds helps fend off pneumonia!
Some roads block regularly in snow, but most places can be sorted with the right tyres, and a sensible approach. Local employers are not unreasonable!
It has wonderful great big green open spaces. Restful on the eyes. Affordable on the wallet. Just the slopes can take practice...
    Have fun!

Personally I'd not enjoy doing the journey from Worsley to Oldham via the M60 in the rush hour on a regular basis!

I'm not sure anywhere near Oldham meets all of your criteria.

If you want good pubs, independent shops, culture etc then you are better off in areas like Chorlton and Didsbury. Trams into Manchester Piccaddilly for your trip down. Not ruralish though. you would just about make it home in rush hour.

Greenfield, Uppermill and Marple for ruralish . The first two fall in Saddleworth. All three fall in your criteria apart from the travel links to London and the independent shops etc

Prestwich is tons better than over rated south Manc! and (Oldham Ewwww) it has the M-way on its doorstep along with more country side than anywhere else
Check out Prestwich people on FB
also Whitefield and Unsworth depending on Budget
Oldham can be done in 20 minutes from Prestwich and Whitefield
PM me if you want to know more as I live in one of the above areas
Spending my time reading how to fix PC's,instead of looking at Facebook.

Prestwich is nice (although prices seem to be going insane, it's not THAT nice!) but it's a bit daft to suggest it has 'more countryside' than Oldham, which literally has miles and miles of open moorland!
