Going back to manual from automatic?

What car are you looking for? A petrol auto off roader? Most will be diesel as I think you've found. I know you've said you don't like CVT, but have you driven a Nissan Murano? The first ones were petrol only, and suffered for it too in the UK. Maybe worth a drive to see if 'modern' CVT is really all that bad.
Did they do a diesel Murano?0 -

Subaru Forester petrol is available with a CVT box which has paddles. Using paddles locks the CVT in a 'gear' to allow more control.
2.0 150bhp or 2.0 XT (230ish) available. The 150 has quite respectable mpg figures, the XT not so!0 -
I've had my present auto for nearly 14 years now and have simultaneously owned manual cars with no problem switching between them. However, I strongly recommend avoiding using the left foot in the auto. The left foot is trained to operate a clutch pedal which is depressed with an entirely different action from that used on a brake pedal. If you accidentally use a clutch pedal action on a brake pedal you're likely to go through the windscreen.somethingcorporate wrote: »I didn't realise anyone was a left foot braker!!
I have an auto and often drive manuals for work. First time I did it after getting the auto I was amazed how I could still just do it without thinking about it.
The only issues I have are stalling (I always do at least once every time I drive a manual) and rolling backwards when I'm meant to be stationary. I hardly ever use the handbrake in my auto, so completely forget that I need to if I'm stationary in a manual. Does feel a bit weird going straight into an auto within a few mins of a manual though.0 -
I prefer manual, as I use double clutch quite a bit.
I can run on gear 5 over 30mph with Zetec hardly any revs as long as it is not going upwards.
Also I do not change from gear 5 to 4 to 3 to 2 to 1 as we all have to do during our driving test, I just go from 5 to double clutch, with one pinball nudge.
I drive manual in a semi automatic style. When you look into an abyss, the abyss also looks into you. Nietzsche
Please note that at no point during this work was the kettle ever put out of commission and no chavs were harmed during the making of this post.0 -
I would never go back to a manual. When I have to drive a manual hire car for a while this just cements my attitude.
For those who miss the control on nice open country roads - my auto has a sport mode which changes up much later and gives me a nice zippy ride. But 90% of my journey is on busy roads and I can't say I miss the clutch one little bit.0 -

 This post makes no sense.0 -
He means that he makes an intelligent decision about which gear to be in, rather than slavishly working through the gears in sequence.
I thought everybody did that, that is why the lever will go into any gear.
The only time I ever go 1-2-3-4-5-6-5-4-3-2-1 is on a motorbike because the gearbox is sequential.I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

Could you explain "double clutch" please? Do you mean "double declutch"? I owned a 1932 Standard Little Nine for some years ....3 forward gears with no synchromesh so double de clutching all the time. My present MGA has never had any detectable synchromesh on second gear which has allowed me to keep in practice and means that the car makes the appropriate noises.0

I've had an auto and manual at the same time, and found no issues swapping between them.
I now drive a manual.
I'll happily skip gears; if I accelerate to the speed limit in 2nd, then I'll just go straight into 4th/5th. I quite like changing down through the gears as I decelerate though.0
