Going back to manual from automatic?

Have done for over 30 years.
It's no problem to right foot brake in a manual or on a motorbike, or left hand brake on a pushbike either
The only time I've had trouble was in a Vectra, when it had this daft idea of dropping into neutral when your foot is on the brake. The design plan was to lift the right foot off the brake, and it goes back into gear by the time you've moved your foot onto the accelerator.
However, the simultaneous mash down & lift up technique meant it went into gear with a great CLANG at about 2000 rpm.
I never managed to break it, but I bet it wasn't doing it much good.I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

You can always tell the left-foot brakers, their brake lights are always on because they rest their foot on the pedal.:)Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.0

Went from having a 3-speed automatic for 3 years to a 6-speed manual. It took about 3-4 days to get used to driving a manual again. It probably helped that it was a very nice manual gearbox and easy to use.0

It is a shame that market is very limited for petrol automatic crossover/SUV. Some do come with CVTs which I find horrible! You can't really override in a CVT unlike in traditional autos.
The newer Toyota CVT has both paddles and a lever option to change, not sure about any others, I love the CVT's, although I fully understand a lot hate them, but try an ASG in one of the small cars if you want horrible
I think a few crossovers are coming with DCT auto boxes now.0 -
I've had my present auto for nearly 14 years now and have simultaneously owned manual cars with no problem switching between them. However, I strongly recommend avoiding using the left foot in the auto. The left foot is trained to operate a clutch pedal which is depressed with an entirely different action from that used on a brake pedal. If you accidentally use a clutch pedal action on a brake pedal you're likely to go through the windscreen.0

You may just need to learn the best speed at which to change gear.
Don't assume all manuals are happy with changes at low engine revs and will do 30mph in top gear.0 -
I simply can't imagine why people spend large amounts of money on cars where you have to work the gears yourself, and then claim they are "better" :rotfl:
Takes all sorts I suppose........
A bit like saying you'd rather wash your clothes in a twin tub than an automatic washing machine because it gives you more control.:rotfl:0 -
I didn't realise anyone was a left foot braker!!
Been driving the auto for about 2 years and would never go back - Id rather focus on driving safely than flapping about with gears even though it had got to a stage where it was on autopilot.Thinking critically since 1996....0 -
What car are you looking for? A petrol auto off roader? Most will be diesel as I think you've found. I know you've said you don't like CVT, but have you driven a Nissan Murano? The first ones were petrol only, and suffered for it too in the UK. Maybe worth a drive to see if 'modern' CVT is really all that bad.0
