I was always told they have to get in once a year to read your meter. You can submit your own readings up till then. Its to check for fraud etc.

Upgrade to a smart meter. Problem solved.
My son has had huge problems with his, as it malfunctioned leading to a dispute over what is owed.

    Hi,

How do expect to ne notified when a meter reader is due, jungs, they are doing about 200 houses a day, and you want a specific time?

You need one appointment, every two years, only. This is for safety checking purposes. Otherwise, there is no need for a visit, as readings are done via the website (online account being the condition of my tariff).

I don't trust these meter readers since one failed to hand in my electricity reading (the meter is outside, as in every house on our estate), but submitted my gas reading (given in the days when I could get down to read the meter). This resulted in an apparent credit of £600, which, luckily, I had the sense to dispute.

Take this opportunity to declutter the cupboard. You'll feel much better for it and the meter reader will be able to see the meter !

Not in this house he wouldn't as the reader has to climb in side a cupboard to read it. And it's high up so short people myself included can't even read it then. Hubby just manages and he is over six foot.

My gas meter is at a weird angle.
When you open the cupboard you are greeted by its side and partially it's back. The face with clocks is angled towards a rear corner. Cupboard isn't partially wide either so access is truly difficult even w/o any stuff in the cupboard....although there is stuff in there
Whoever installed it was an idiot.

However we've discovered a 'trick' as one reader read the meter in this way...took a photo on his phone.
Didn't need to move anything nor climb in, so now I mention it to any reader who turns up.

Thankfully the electric is outside and we're.not asked for access.

I noticed recently that my meter cupboard was swinging open. I was surprised, because I could have sworn I locked it. I was further surprised that it didn't close properly and I had to bend the door into shape and do some jiggery pokery before I could relock it.

Coincidentally went to check my npower account and guess what, there was an npower meter reading there. Someone had come round without warning, forced open my meter cupboard (it's outside my property) and taken a reading.

I'm still debating complaining. I fear it's a little petty, but I'm annoyed that I wasn't told in advance that a meter reader would be coming. The door is outside my flat, but inside a secure building, so I would have been happy to unlock it myself at the start of the day and relock it at the end after the meter reader had been. I just don't see the need to force open doors with brute force when there's a perfectly good key that belongs to the homeowner.

You know when the meter readers have been because half the houses have their meter doors swinging open. If they can't close then properly then they shouldn't open them.

Persa - I'm a little confused here - what is the secure building? If it's an outside meter box the meter readers will have their own key - they are standard - they do not need yours to open them.

Sorry for the confusion - the the meter box is directly outside my flat, which is in an apartment block, i.e. not inside my own property per se, but not exposed to the weather either. It lives in the communal hallways to which I have right of passage but don't actually own. Does that make more sense?

Not brave enough to see if my key fits any of the neighbours' meter cupboards (that would look quite weird if one of them caught me!) but my cupboard definitely has a key, and after the meter reader had come, the meter door was definitely bent and swinging open. I've noticed several of the neighbours' meter cupboards look a bit misshapen, so presumably the same person has been pulling open their cupboards too!
