They are not required to check your meter regularly; only when the provider says so. I have never been rude to any reader, but two, both males, have been very rude to me, making untrue statements about their power of entry. (eg 'I can get a court order to enter.' 'Sorry, but you can't as I have not refused a meter check up, as I had one only 6 months ago.' )

They are not employed by the provider , but work for a subcontracting company.

I have absolutely nothing to hide ,have never been in debt (always in credit), but have a bad back and can not just grab one of my dogs, whom I prefer to be crated if a stranger comes into the house. Also, there are items stacked in my pantry, where the meter lives, which someone going in their could consider a hazard, so I need notice to move them.

I am entitled to my privacy and have the right to have my meter checked by appointment. As I have an online account readings are unnecessary and checks not required every three months. I know this, as relatives used to work for my energy supplier.

They are required to check your meter when your provider request it of them which is every 3 months.
Yes they work for a sub contracted company, who do you think hires them?

If you want the meter reader to come by appointment then you need to set that up with your provider.

Maybe so, but if they wanted to read the meter they either gave me notice to move the stuff or they do it themselves.

    very considerate of you.

I wonder, sometimes, when reading replies on various threads of people complaining about delivery men/ postmen/ meter readers/ etc, just what they do for a living, and if dealing with the general public how they handle it.

Can't all be CEOs, does your binman need an appointment to tip your wheelie?

You sound extremely sanctimonious with an 'I'm superier than thow attitude'.

    Take care.

For goodness sake, it would have been quicker to let them read the meter than come on here complaining. The chap's doing a job. Let him get on with it, smile and say goodbye as he leaves your property with a smile and a thank you.
  • I used to have a job dealing with the public but not in meter reading. I can tell you that it's the grumpy one in a hundred that can spoil your day and you're only doing your job. I hope you're not in the diplomatic service.

the gas meter was there before you decided to fill the area with your junk.

Are you suggesting that people should not use the space in their own homes for the convenience of the energy companies?

  • Hi,

    oh jings no.

The meter was probabley there before you decide to clutter it up with your junk.

There should be free access, if you want to stuff your old telly, computer monitor, hoover, whatever, to block access, that's up to you.

    oh jings no.

You say, before going on to say the exact opposite.
The meter was probabley there before you decide to clutter it up with your junk.

    Of course it was there.

No, the energy company should let you know when the reader is coming.

Eon send an email before the meter reading is due.

The energy companies have statutory right of entry to your property once every two years. If they want entry at any other time they must fit in with your availability.

One would hope that in the vast majority of cases this will not be an issue, but if, for some reason, it is not convenient, then they will just have to lump, it and accept a customer reading, or make an estimate; exactly the same as they do when there is no answer, a situation that is going to result in vastly more failed attempts at reading the meter than the rare indisposition of the householder.

As this is the vent board, you are allowed to vent about their rudeness.
  • Upgrade to a smart meter. Problem solved.

Oh aye, so a meter reader is doing your street, and you are number 37, you are told he will be there at 9-30, if he is early or late, you would complain?

Then he goes to number 39, probabley late because of having to move junk from your clutter.

Eon send an email before the meter reading is due.

Yes, though that's probabley for online accounts.
    .

How do expect to ne notified when a meter reader is due, jungs, they are doing about 200 houses a day, and you want a specific time?
