Well I tried it anyway and now the boiler won't turn on at all. The fuse on the power switch blew, which I've replaced and now that's coming on but there's still no power to the boiler. Checked the fuse in the boiler itself and its ok. Pleas tell me I'm not screwed.

Thanks! It turns out only the neutral (blue) wire was attached to the boiler! The other two were just hanging there. I've attached the Live (brown) based on the image you linked, but I wasn't 100% about where to put the green/yellow. Does it go in the far left socket, if blue is in the far right (or "top" if blue is in the "bottom")?
No, the stat needs to be wired in series with the time clock.

add http:// to the front of the above address

Remove the stat Brown and Green/yellow wires that you have connected incorrectly straight across the live and neutral supply.

Remove the black with orange sleeve in 1 and put it into 2.

Connect your stat A - Brown to 1

Connect your stat B - Green/Yellow to 2, where you moved the black wire to.

Thanks but whatever I did the boilers not coming on. I think I need to call in a plumber for this.

The boiler manual states that a volt free stat must be used.

Your stat is volt free but because you wired it incorrectly, you have actually connected mains voltage to the boiler control board.

You had all of the info required to connect the stat but obviously did not understand the diagrams.

Indeed. Does that mean the control board will have blown? How much is a replacement?

The spark is coming tomorrow morning. What is the worse case scenario here? Will the entire boiler need replaced?

I've learnt my lesson, I won't be meddling in things I don't understand.

Not the whole boiler. Maybe the PCB. I won't say I told you so, but...

Quite likely as tradesmen don't repair PCB's, even if only one component has burnt out, they simply replace the board.

Enter "Vokera 10023537 PCB" into Google and then click on "Shopping" and remember to add callout/labour charge.

As you will see there is a big variation in price and the refurbished one for £30 would be my choice.
  • Return it as found, play stupid. Hopefully your Landlord has a boiler repair contract in place and it'll all end happily

Someone else suggested I do that too, but I think I'd rather be honest and pay for it to get fixed myself. Having said that, is there any reason the Landlord would have to know about this? I'd prefer to get it fixed without them ever knowing anything was wrong. I only moved in a month ago, I don't want to give him them impression I'm going to destroy his house.
