Replacing this thermostat

I'm not entirely convinced the thermostat in my rented home is working correctly. The house gets too warm and the boiler won't shut off, even when I set the thermostat to <10C (the room temp was ~16C). The thermostat is in the living room on the wall opposite the wall with the radiator, which I have turned up to full.
Here's the inside of it: http://imgur.com/RPafu2y
Does it looks like it's wired correctly? If so, would it be easy enough to replace it with a programmable one? I'll hold on to the old one so I can put it back when I leave.

Cannot really tell from a visual picture. Your system really needs electrically testing. Several possibilities:
1 as you ask it may be wired incorrectly at the stat - perhaps posting the make/model someone may know it.
2 the stat may be faulty. If you adjust from cold to hot and back can you hear it click? I.e. probably switching as you pass through that temperature.
3 that cable you can see needs to be wired correctly at the other end to the heating system
4 that heating system needs to be responding appropriately.
If it was your own property I would suggest, if you are not competent call in a friendly electrician or someone with the necessary skills/competence level so that proper tests can be done. Beware that there may well be mains voltages on those wires and who knows if they are properly connected and really if it is a rented property is it not the landlord's responsibility both to ensure functionality and safety of the system????.0 -
It looks to me like it's been wired for cooling, rather than heating. It also looks to be sloppily installed (trapped live, strands astray, no brown sleeve on the earth wire, and quite possibly only twin & earth rather than 3c & earth which it should be)!
Try turning the stat fully up. Does the heating knock off? If so, then the wire into terminal 4 needs to go into terminal 3.
But...I'd recommend approaching the landlord as it's not your problem!
If you're intending doing anything yourself, then please post a better picture (of everything, including the face plate) and if possible a part number and manufacturer. And above all else, switch off at the consumer unit main switch (which, as a non-tradesman, you should have done before removing the cover anyway!).0 -
Honeywell T6360 ?
Agree with YorkshireBoy, I expect the heating will go off when the stat is turned up to full so 4 will need moving to 3 WITH THE POWER SWITCHED OFF FIRST.0 -
That's the one I was thinking of (well T6360A). Certainly looks the same...Honeywell T6360 ?

Bit reluctant to say what I do for a living in case I'm wrong!

Agree with all that, assuming earth is being used as the switched live out, which should be in terminal 3. All assuming it's wired up correctly at the other end.
Terminal 4 is the cooling load.0 -
Thanks for the replies so far! Here's a few more images - http://imgur.com/a/HToCd
This seems to be the model - http://heatcool.gmc.globalmarket.com/products/details/mechanical-room-thermostat-tr-010x-114348.html
Turning the thermostat up and down doesn't seem to have any immediate effect on the boiler. However, it does make a click sound, if that means anything. The boiler does turn off and on, so I'm guessing the thermostat is working but maybe the temps are off or there's a delay.0 -
Do as I said in post #30

Ok, I turned the thermostat up to 30C. It ran until my room thermometer read 18C. I turned it down to 10C and it didn't turn on again.
If I switch the wires, is there a chance I could permanently damage system? I'll be sure to turn off the mains first ofc. I'd rather try and sort it myself before calling landlord.0 -
No damage will be done. Just swap the wire!0
