    I've upgraded 2 machines, 1x Win7 Pro and 1x Win7 Starter, each SP1.
I downloaded the Win 10 .iso, so that I had a backup.
Both times, I created a bootable usb using the .iso and Rufus. Booted the laptop to Win 7, inserted usb, then ran setup from the .iso.
    Worked perfectly each time.
Incidently, for various reasons each laptop had a clean install of Win7 SP1, I didn't even bother to run updates, just installed Win 10.
    Move along, nothing to see.

so you did a clean install instead of the initial upgrade?

are your machines now registered with Microsoft after doing the clean install ?
  • The update went fine on my year old Windows 8 laptop, however while I didn't like Windows 8 the laptop it was on was always very fast to boot up and to use, with Windows 10 installed it took an age to do anything. In the end I rolled back to Windows 8, which I believe you can do for a month afterward, and the roll back worked fine too and I was back to a superfast laptop again.

I'll stick with Windows 8, I wasn't 'that' impressed with anything in Windows 10 to make me feel I'm missing anything.

Because I didn't want a Microsoft .iso on a stick.
I downloaded Win10 32 bit and 64 bit, then made a bootable usb some days later at my leisure.
Use Rufus because I know it's reliable and works for Windows installs.

edit. The .iso now sits in storage along with all my other OS .iso's

  • but you HAVE burnt a MICROSOFT ISO onto a pendrive, did it change to another brand when you burnt it?

    Are you being deliberately thick?
    No need to shout.
You've had your original questions answered.

I didn't want to download+create a usb from Microsoft at that time.

All I wanted were the 32 and 64 bit versions to use when needed.
I'm installing Windows, Linux and others all the time, so prefer to keep a library of .iso's rather than a load of usbs each with a different OS.
It's how I organise my work, you may be different.

I'm off, not going to clog up 'rik's thread.
    Move along, nothing to see.
