5.1 speakers

At least I think that's what they are called. 1 large speaker and 4 smaller ones to put around the room. The sound quality when attached to my old computer was superb. Can I now connect these together and plug my little MP3 player into them? I don't want to blow anything as the speakers are huge in comparison with the music player. Do I just use the MP3 headphone socket to connect them?

Thanks

You can connect them, but you won't get 5.1 surround sound AND if you connect from the headphone jack, it'll cause distortion at higher volumes due to impedance mismatching.

  • So Strider, what would you use them with? I had the connected to my old desktop computer which has been scrapped. I have a laptop which has music stored on it, would this be ok connected and would it improve the sound of music? I want to use these speakers but I'm not sure what to connect them to. Suggestions wanted please?

  • Assuming the "large speaker" is a sub-woofer, then it's actually 4.1
  • Thanks for that, I might just need to ask a few more questions about this tomorrow when I have read a bit more about this box. I'm an oldie so need a bit of time to digest info.

Morning peeps, the speakers are Creative Inspire 5.1 5300. I have put the 5 speakers, yes 5 into the larger subwoofer and there is a bit of noise coming from all the speakers so I know they are working. I now need to connect to a music playing device, either my laptop or a little MP3 player but the laptop doesn't have the number of input points that I need. What would I need to connect either of the above music players to this box? Is this where the device sold on Amazon kindly linked for me would come in?

Ah!It says I may not post attachments on here so I can't post a pic but there are 3 empty audio input jack holes coloured orange, green and black and I have the cable with the same coloured jacks but not enough in points on my laptop to attach these to?

Any help from here much appreciated but bear in mind I am not a technical bod in the least.

The box in question is wifi, meaning your laptop will stream the music directly to it wirelessly (assuming your laptop is wifi enabled).

The box will plug into the rear of the Amp, akin to plugging in a cd\aux player.

  • Hm!! Thanks Marleyboy, I understand that, I think. The wi fi i box picks up wirelessly from my laptop but it is connected to the speakers via a cable, presumably there will be one in the package which will fit my speakers??! I can't see a sub port anywhere on these speakers.

    Thanks again.
  • I have looked at this wi Fi box and it seems to be just what I need so I am going to send for it. I may well need a bit more help when it arrives as the bit where I need to set the wifi security on my laptop seems a bit daunting so perhaps someone will come to my aid if I need it?

    Thanks

I've actually got a set of these myself, had them years and they are a surprisingly good sound. I don't use them in 5.1 though, they are just set up for 2.1 for the office desktop.
